We will be staying in Salzburg hallstatt area for 3 nights in May. Which city do you recommend staying in and do you have any recommendations on hotels? Also what sites to see. Thank you so much!

Two very different options. Salzburg has many more cultural things to do, while Hallstatt has more active outdoor activities. Each are great in their own way.
I would say that 3 nights in Hallstatt is too much. I've stayed there twice for one night each. Two nights might be better, but three seems excessive. I think you could stay busy in Salzburg for three nights.
Hotel Gruner Baum in Hallstatt. I'll leave it to others to recommend Salzburg hotels.
