Planning a 7 nights trip to Salzburg and would love to spend some time in Budapest as well. We’ve been to Vienna so most likely all fly into Munich or Vienna and go straight to Salzburg, and then train to Vienna then to Budapest. How many days should I spend in each city? While in Salzburg we are thinking about visiting Hallstatt and Wolfgangsee, is it worth it?
Are you saying 7 nights in Salzburg or 7 nights for the whole trip?
Dave has a big question. If your whole trip is 7 nights, then its:
1. Arrive Munich, tired, but hop a train to Salzburg. Night 1, Salzburg
2. Salzburg. Night 2
3. Salzburg, Night 3
4. Salzburg, Night 4
5. Early train to Budapest, Night 5
6. Budapest, Night 6
7. Budapest Night 7
8. Fly home.
Okay, normally I would think that one of those Salzburg nights should go to Budapest just because of size and scale, but you started the thread with you are going to Salzburg, so I am guessing that’s your main focus; and it gives you a day for a day trip to Hallstatt or Wolfgangsee. If I guess wrong, one of the Salzburg nights really does go to Budapest.
Now, if you are spending 7 nights in Salzburg then looking for plans beyond that. First, with 7 nights yes, you have to do some day trips. Hallstatt for sure, maybe Wolfgangsee and one or more of those BAD towns. Better than day trips is plan one on the way to Vienna so you dont back track.
After that, for me the ultimate would be 2 nights in Vienna cause I have seen Vienna or maybe 3 nights with a daytrip to Melk if you haven’t done that yet. Then on the way to Budapest see the archabbey at Pannonhalma and spend a night in Gyor (just hop off the train), then no less than 4 nights in Budapest and 5 wouldn’t be too much.
Thanks to MAV not selling tickets online in the US, train tickets have gotten expensive. Buy the Vienna to Budapest ticket from RegioJet.
Salburg - Budapest is 40,- on OBB, and 35,- on MAV, so not really something to worry about. I would not split the ticket and take regiojet from Vienna. It is unlikely going to save money, and just makes things complicated.
There are direct trains every 2 hours. Just take one of those.
I wasnt suggesting splitting the ticket, but to consider Regiojet if the OP spent a night or two in Vienna.
As for the price difference that depends a lot of the train and the date and when you buy the ticket. In some situations the cheapest you will find on OBB will be 101.60 euro with a seat in other situations the cheapest on MAV can be as low as 37 euro with a seat. At other times both companies have about the same price. So you really have to check both when it comes time to buy the ticket. The problem with buying MAV tickets has been resolved (use the website and not the app) so thats no longer an issue.
