One week in Bavaria and Salzburg

Please give your suggestions. We are staying at Salzburg for 3 nights (Arrival from Munich airport). We have been there and we have visited old city, sound of music trip and Lake District. Now, we have to explore the Salzburg surrounding areas. I have a list going: Hallstatt, Zell Am See/ Kaprun & Kitzsteinhorn, Grossglockner High Alpine Road.

We have the plan to stay 2 nights at Berchtesgaden (to visit Lake Konigssee & boat ride, Obersalzberg & Eagle's Nest, Jenner Mountain, Ramsau Church…) and finally 3 nights at Munich. From Munich, we have the plan to do the day trips to Fussen as well as Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Can someone please suggest the best itinerary and the directions? My Family and I just want to relax and enjoy the beauty of Salzburg and the Bavarian area. We are relying on public transport preferably by trains.

If we need more days we can possibly extend the stay.

Thanks

Are you hoping to experience the Grossglockner High Alpine Road by train?

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road, I considered to be one of the top attractions in the Austrian Alps. So I have the plan to do a full day guided tour from Salzburg. Please suggest the reliable tour operators.

I wouldn't stay in Salzburg for the places you want to visit. Stay Berchtesgaden 2 or 3 nights and then and in Zell am See for 2 or 3 nights. I don't how how long it takes by train or bus, but by car Berchtesgaden to Konigssee and the Jennerbahn is 10 minutes, Ramsau 10 minutes, and to Hallstatt is about 1:30. Then onto Zell am See is 1:30. By Zell am See starts the Grossglockner Road. Maybe there's a tour from Zell am See or Kaprun? Since you're not spending time in Munich (2 day trips in your 2 days), why not base 2 nights in Garmisch? Again, by car Fuessen is only an hour away.

Someone can help with times and routes by train.

on Paul's advice, we stayed in Berchtesgaden last year and used it as a base for visiting the surrounding area. it was great. to visit salzburg we drove in ( could have used the train) the short distance. there is so much to see in the area. we also stayed in Zell and Hallstatt. but for things to see and do Berchtesgaden area was the best.

have a good time.
