I will be flying in to Salzburg in June. I would like to go directly to Hallstatt and spend a night. Is there an easy way to do it using public transportation? Thanks for your help.

The typical train-based route takes about 3 hours: airport bus to Salzburg, then train to Hallstatt station with a connection at Attnang-Pucheim. See www.oebb.at. After that, there's a short boat ride across the lake.
www.rome2rio.com suggests that an all-bus route would also take 3.5 hours and include 2 transfers (and no ferry).

Hi Laura, Thanks for your reply. With all the transfers between bus, train and boat, will it really be three hours? Will all the connections fall right? My arrival in Salzburg is scheduled for 1:30. Between getting my bags and going through customs, is it reasonable to get to Hallstatt in time for the last boat? Thanks for your help. Domenic

This 15:46 example (runs Mon-Sat) is the latest departure that you can take, but similar connections depart at 13:46, 14:26, or 14:46. I expect that Salzburg airport is quite small and easy to navigate. I assume that you have a flight connection from a larger city in Europe and will go through passport control there. However, if your flight is delayed much more than an hour, you might not make it.
