Salzburg 3 night 4 days - flexible to add an extra day

Hello,

i just realized that we have more time to spend in Austria. We plan to use Salzburg as base as we dont like to carry luggages if we keep moving accomodation. We are not crazy with museums or castles, but will take suggestion on one or two best ones. I need suggestion which side trips we hv to go other than Hallstatt and Melk which are already in our list. We are thinking of renting a car, but welcome any good suggestion with transport. We love mountain and lake scenery.

Berchtesgaden National Park and Königssee in Germany. Drive a little further to Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden to The Church of St. Sebastian and the Hintersee.

The Watzmann Express (RVO 840) leaves from the Salzburg Hbf and stops in town and goes to the Hbf in Berchtesgaden in less than an hour. If you buy an RVO-Tagesticket from the bus driver for 10€/adult, you can ride the bus round trip and take buses from the Hbf up to the Kelhstein Busabfahrt (place where the special buses go up to the Eagles Nest) and the Dokumentation Center, or to the Salt Mine, or to the spa, or out to Königssee, all on the same ticket.

The last bus leaves for Salzburg around 6 pm. If you want to stay later, buy the BGL-Tagesticket Bus & Bahn from the driver for 2 euro more. It would allow you to come back on the train through Freilassing until late.

In 2009, I took a bus from the Salzburg Hbf to Mondsee (SOM Wedding church), then another bus through St. Gilgen and along Wolfgangsee to Bad Ischl. Or you can take a bus directly to St. Gilgen. The trains from Salzburg to Halstatt stop in Bad Ischl.

Also right in the Berchtesgaden/Konigssee are is the Rossfeld Panorama Road if you'll be driving. Very scenic alpine drive above Berchtesgaden. Don't miss the luge ride (Sommerrodelbahn) while up there.
