Salzburg - 2 or 3 days?

We are planning our 2026 trip to Austria. Originally, I had budgeted two full days (three nights) in Salzburg – one day focusing on the Alstadt (Old Town) sights and the other on New Town and the Hohensalburg Fortress & Monchsberg. Ideally, we’d spend evenings taking in a musical event at the fortress, Marabell Palace or somewhere else.

However, my wife is now interested in taking the half-day SOM tour. My question is this – do I need to add a third day in Salzburg or can this be squeezed in somewhat comfortably with the rest? I believe there is some overlap on sites, but not much. If we add a third day, what would you suggest we pair with the SOM tour to fill out the day? We will be coming from Wolfgangsee and Hallstatt and heading next to Werfen so no need to head out of town to those places.

Thank you.

I would add a third day. We did the SOM tour with Bob's Special Tours and absolutely loved it! They use small vans, so there are only about 8 people or so. After that tour, you could so a cooking class. Edelweiss Cooking School was a lot of fun. We made strudel and cookies. They have several different classes though, and their website shows the times etc. The times for both of these would work to fill one day.

Two days is good for me. I don't know anything about the SOM tour but I'd include a Hellbrunn Palace visit and a walk back to town along the path by the river.

Re Werfen, don't know where you are going after that but I'd stay in Salzburg and do the ice caves and castle as a day trip, about an hour by public transport.

Thank you for the insight. We don't want to rush through things so will add a third day for the SOM tour.
@Gundersen - we're planning to hit Werfen on our way to our next stop, the Tyrol.

This again is a question to which the answer invariably will be very subjective. We spent a full week last summer in Salzburg and could have stayed longer. We loved strolling the Salzach and the streets of this scenic town, enjoying local fairs and markets, going to the Mülln neighborhood and visiting the Augustiner Bräu (best spareribs I've ever eaten), visiting the parks, visiting the Altstadt (old town). Didn't do the Sound of Music tour, didn't enter the Fortress Hohensalzburg. Still filled every day easily. Can't wait to go back.

With all that being said, most people IMO will find three days in Salzburg to be sufficient. And if 3 days leaves you wanting, you'll have a reason to return.

If you have a car, you could visit the places on the SOM tour on your own, at your leisure. Hellbrunn palace is one stop, but it was a short stop on our tour.

On the way from Wolfgansee, you could stop in Mondsee to see the church where they got married.

In town, you can go the Mirabell gardens and the cemetary, where they filmed the scenes where the family was hiding.

The opening scene, where she’s twirling in the hills, was filmed in Werfen. It’s a gorgeous area.

Three full days was enough for me to see most everything I wanted to see.

I would consider the Schifffahrt Königssee if you have never been to Wallfahrtskirche St. Bartholomä. Could take the better part of a day.

When you finish your plan, would you mind sharing it with me? I'm looking at going in October, 2025 so don't have much time to plan.
