Salzburg 2 Day Itinerary Check?

Thoughts on this first rough draft for an itinerary? Trip is in May.

We will be taking the train from Munich. I am estimating that by the time we get to our hotel to drop off our luggage it will be around 11 AM.

Saturday:
Drop off bags and walk down Linzer Gasse (our hotel is located here), then see the St. Sebastian cemetery
Backtrack and take a photo outside the Mozart Residence, then cross the Marko-Feingold-Steg
Getreidegasse Street, photo outside Mozart’s birthplace
Explore the Alter Markt area
Cafe Furst or Cafe Tomaselli
Salzburg Cathedral
St. Peter’s Abbey
If time before dinner, explore fortress Hohensalzburg
Dinner & Mozart concert at Fortress Hohensalzburg (6:30)
Sunday:
AM: Schloss Hellbrun (about 30 min away, opens 9:30 AM)
PM: Explore Fortress Hohensalzburg if not enough time day before or Mirabell Palace

I was hoping to also do Mirabell Palace but not sure if it’s plausible to fit it in. Thought we could at least get a tiny taste doing the concert there at night? It would actually make more sense to do Mirabell in place of Hellbrun since Mirabell is close to our hotel, but I’m very charmed by the trick fountains and think it would add a little variety to very palace-filled Europe itinerary. Thoughts?

My thoughts are mostly that your interests differ somewhat from mine. And that's great! Vive la différence.

We enjoyed shopping in the Alter Markt, which is unusual for us as we're not shoppers, normally. I enjoyed, above everything else, just walking around the delightful little city, including the fortress area and the environs around its base. The Augustiner Bräu Mülln was great fun, with excellent beer and the best spare ribs I've ever eaten in a wonderful beer garden setting. And dinner at St. Peter Stiftskulinarium was a rare treat. Just a couple more ideas to think about.

Thank you! That restaurant looks incredible! Curious what your stay in Salzburg looked like since you said our interests mostly seem different!

We stayed in an AirBnB south of the center city, next to the Salzach River, and we walked past the Volkspark every day on our way to the tourist sites. In general we do a lot of walking everywhere we go, typically 25,000 steps a day.

We aren't big on photos, especially selfies, and we don't have a lot of interest in fortresses, palaces and ornate churches. But we appreciate the viewpoints of people who like all those things. As for music, we went to several concerts in Poland and Prague before hitting Salzburg, so maybe we were "music'ed out." We did attend more music events once we got to Bologna a couple weeks later.

Hi Sally,
You'll have a wonderful time in Salzburg. It's a walking town so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. One recommendation, maybe instead of or in addition to visiting Cafe Tomaselli, try to make time to stop for a coffee and something sweet at Cafe Bazar. It's on the new city side of the river and tends to be a little less crowded with a beautiful view of the fortress and river if you sit out side. For lunch, go up to the Stadtalm. You'll get there by climbing the steps behind The Toscaninihof, a courtyard between the monastery of St. Peter and the Felsenreitschule. It's up on the ridge overlooking the city. Ask for directions...it's easy to get to..... it's a must . Have Fun....

I've been to Salzburg numerous times. I would suggest a few adjustments.

After walking down Linzer Gasse, I would take a right and walk to Mirabell Gardens (it is gardens you see anyway). (Stop at the Cafe Bazar along the way for lunch). Walk through the gardens and then cross the Müllnersteg, heading towards the Mönchsberg Elevator. Take the elevator up and walk along the Mönchsberg path towards Dr. Ludweg Prahauser Weg, which will take you to the fortress providing numerous excellent postcard photo opportunities. Explore the fortress and be sure to have an apfelstrudel at the cafe on the terrace at the top (magnificent views). I would have dinner at the Augustiner Brau, which will be 100% perfect in May with the chestnut blossoms. Much better than an overpriced concert and a mid-quality meal for tourists.

The next day, head to Schloss Hellbrunn - it is an absolute must and the trick fountains are a real gem. Do not skip this. In the afternoon explore the lower part of the town, such as the cathedral and abbey.

we are trying to build our Austrian itinerary as well. I had 4 days for Vienna (understanding that many people have posted about 5+ days...) and then allowing 2 days in Salzburg.

Is that enough time for Salburg?

As I've said elsewhere, "enough time" is meaningless without identifying what exactly one plans to do in a place. Everyone has their own ideas for what are the most interesting and important things to see and do. But two days will allow a lot of fun in Salzburg. It's not a huge city.
