Is Munich the closest airport to Saltzburg? Ideally after visiting Saltzburg I would like to then travel by train to Milan. What would you suggest?

It certainly is the biggest international airport. Salzburg does have an airport, but no flights to Italy. It is 8 hours to Milan on the train. Figure 6 hours flying from Munich (2 hours on the train to the airport, 2 hours allowance for check in, 1 hour flight time, 1 hour airport to Milan city center).

When looking up schedules it will help if you spell it "Salzburg".
