Salzburg Day Trip

Any recommendations for a tour of Salzburg? We will be staying in Munich and going to Salzburg for the day. We are looking for a tour that can show us the highlights of Salzburg. TIA

Please take this the right way - your spelling should be Salzburg. I just am trying to help make sure you get to the right place :)

I think a good guidebook and map would tell you all you need to know. The old town is fairly compact and walkable. And you want to go up the funicular to the fortress. The Mozart-related stuff is kind of overblown, and I think that's what tours might focus on. It's just one day, so a good lunch and the transportation to and from will take up much of that time.

I did Salzburg as a day trip by train from Vienna and made great use of the sometimes wonderful, sometimes not so much HoHo bus--in this case it worked perfectly because many of the sites I wanted to see were far outside the old town area and the audio tour was helpful. I spent time exploring the gardens at Mirabell palace, toured Hellbrunn for a couple of hours--beautiful gardens with fabulous fountains--and a couple of other sites, then the rest of the day in old town for a late lunch, then touring Mozart's gebursthaus and walking along the river where an excellent crafts market was taking place. There's more to do but this took up a good 7 hours. Easy walk back to the train station.

Rick goes into quite a bit of detail in his guidebooks, hopefully you have already read that.

There are companies that do feature the Sound of Music and those that don't, that should be your first decision. The city itself is quite small and Rick's walking tour would be just fine, if you specifically want to see SOM sites in and out of the city you should take a bus tour such as Bob's. And watch Youtube videos on Salzburg so you can crib from them.
