Rode my bike to the city center this afternoon for some photos (see the results at 3point14maker on Instagram). Thought I would share this quiet and quaint corner of the Vienna city center, which is well off of the wide, imperial streets that most visit.
Start off at the corner of Bäckerstraße and Postgasse. Walk up Bäckerstraße and visit the Jesuitenkirche on the right at the far end of the square. While Jesuitenkirche doesn't look like much from the outside, the inside is stunning and probably my favorite church interior in Vienna. Return to Bäckerstraße and pause at number 12 to find the medieval frescoes uncovered during renovation. Why a cow is wearing glasses playing chess, who knows. Just a little ways up the street you'll find Kaffee Alt Wien, full of wood paneling, velvet sofas and posters all over the walls as well as great strudel. Stop here for coffee. Once done, cross over to Sonnenfelsgasse through the alleyway just to the right of Kaffee Alt Wien. Jog just to the right and walk down Schönlaterngasse, probably the most beautiful street in Vienna. Just as that road curves, turn left into Heiligenkreuzerhof, a sunny square where you can find roses climbing walls next to old lanterns. Return back to Schönlaterngasse taking a left following the road as it curves toward a great wine bar named Vinothek W-Einkehr (stop here if you want to try some good Austrian wines from experts). Be sure to notice the Basiliskenhaus on your left - a real Vienna mystery involving a monster with a now commemorative statue. Turn right on Postgasse and have a look inside Katholische Kirche Maria Rotunda. End with dinner, perhaps. at the iconic Plachutta Wollzeile or, if still in need of a coffee, stop at Café Prückel.
Have fun!
