Road Trip in Europe Through Austria

Dear All,

We are 2 young couples trying to do a 23 days long Euro Trip in mid May 2015. We will be hiring rental car in Paris. We will be visiting Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland back to Paris.

We will drive from Munich to Vienna (stay in Vienna for 3 days) and from there to Halstatt (stay for 1 day), Heilingenblut (2 days especially to drive on the Gross Glockner Alpine Pass road. From Heilingenblut we will be driving to Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland to spend 5 days in Swiss Alps and finally drive to Paris.

I'm confused on the Halstatt and Heilingenblut part. Wondering if my bases are correct or is there a better base i can make so that i can explore Halstatt, Salzburg and traverse through Gross Glockner Alpine pass road. Further when i leave Austria, time to reach Lauterbrunne should be done in a day prefereably.

Any assistance on the Austrian part will be appreciation from the forum members. I have gone through the forums, but im still confused. This is my first time in Europe doing a road trip.

Regards,
Rakesh

Hi,

Thanks you for your reply. What is your suggestion in terms of making a place a base. I'm as of now wondering should i make Zell am see as the base to explore Halstatt and do Gross Glockner Alpine pass road.

Rakesh

Yes Rakesh ji,
Transfer from Austrian alps to lauterbrunnen is possible in a day, it'll take around 6-7 hrs via vaduz. Though You haven't mentioned about how you would be going back to Paris, because if you go directly then it would become too hectic.

Zell Am see is not a base, it is an excursion from Innsbruck or Salzburg. if u wish to use glosshockner alpine highway then you can cover it as a triangle to include all the 3 cities.

Hi Rakesh,
This is exactly what we did a year ago:) we traveled from Prague to Hallstatt through Gross Glockner and on to Switzerland (at least that's what was planned). Why do you need to stay at Heilingenblut for two days? Driving the Alpine Road shouldn't take that long, even with all the stops for pictures, etc. You can reach Gross Glockner from Hallstatt within couple hours and it is on the way to Switzerland anyways. I really recommend taking the road, it was super beautiful. Just be sure to take care of the car on your way down, as it will be a lot of breaking and your wheels might start get overheated. I wrote an article in my blog on the road trip in Austria, you can see if you find anything useful for yourself: http://www.travel-monkey.com/amazing-austria/, it contains a lot of similar route points.
Good luck in your travel!
