Ringstrasse

We will be staying at the Hilton Vienna at Stadtpark and would like to take the Ringstrasse tram all the way around the day we arrive to get our bearings. Then we may ride it again and get off at various stops to take more time in the places that interest us over the next few days. We will have the travel pass for the whole time we are there for all of the public transportation. I read a post by someone that said you would need to get on the tram at the Schwedenplatz stop. Can someone give us some information about this? I noticed on the map that there are tram stops much closer to our hotel than that one. Does it matter where you get on the tram if you have the pass? Thank you.

Makes absolutely no difference where you get on. Love those trams!

I believe that you have to change from one tram to the other at Schwedenplatz, but you can get on at any stop. Riding the Ring is one of our favorite Vienna things.

The (yellow) RingTram for tourists starts from Schwedenplatz stop (platform C) and ends there after one circle around the Ringstrasse. You may board at any stop along the Ringstrasse, but you will have to wait some minutes for the next scheduled departure at the Schwedenplatz then to continue your round.

Schwedenplatz is reachable very easily from the Hilton hotel, as there is a U4 metro stop underneath the hotel. It is only a ride of one stop to Schwedenplatz by the (green) U4.

It is worth noting that riding a tram around the Ring can be done two ways - 1) Ringtram or 2) normal trams. The Ringtram is not part of the normal public transportation system, so a separate (expensive!) ticket must be purchased to ride the yellow Ringtram. You do get a narration on the ride, however, which tells you what you are seeing. On the normal trams, one can use a normal public transportation ticket. Many trams go partially around the Ring, but you will have to change at least once if you want to complete a full circuit. For example, get on Tram 1 at Oper in the direction of Prater Hauptallee exiting the tram at Schwedenplatz. Change to Tram 2 at Schwedenplatz in the direction of Ottakringer Strasse exiting again at Oper. Honestly, however, the most interesting part of the journey is between Oper and Schottentor which can all be seen from Trams 1, 71 or D.

Rick's book includes a map and detailed description ("now look Left....") of the Ringstrasse tram tour.
