Reutte or Hallstatt

Hello Fellow Travelers,

Planning a trip this fall. Itinerary almost complete, but trying to decide what to do with one day that is still not planned. We'll be visiting the royal castles in Bavaria, and going to Salzburg. We're debating whether to spend a night in Hallstatt, or instead add a night to Fussen (Germany). The motivation for the latter would be to visit the Ehrenberg Castle Ensemble, Ehrenberg ruins, and the Highline 179 footbridge near Reutte, Austria. Hallstatt, on the other hand, offers a charming town in a gorgeous lakeside setting, and the chance to be there in the evening and morning after and before the tourist hordes depart/arrive. The extra day in Fussen would make for a more relaxed itinerary, while the Hallstatt option would be stunningly beautiful, but would make for a more packed itinerary.

We are currently planning to spend 2 nights in Fussen (in order to have one full day for the castles) and 3 nights/2 full days in Salzburg.

Curious to hear opinions on whether to add one day to Fussen or go to Hallstatt instead, especially if you have visited both Hallstatt and Reutte.

Thank you.

You know already the pros and cons of either choice. Nobody can help you deciding what you like more.
It does not matter what I or somebody else would prefer.

I also agree that I can’t answer. Both are worthwhile. You say relaxed vs. packed. How about this, think about which you’d regret not going to.

Will you have a car? If so, you can cram more into a day in either case. There is more to see in Bavaria, so the extra day would mean a better chance to cover all the things that interest you there, even perhaps some not listed here, such as a luge ride, Zugspitze mountain, Ettal Monastery, or a stop in Oberammergau. (Reutte itself is not much to visit; it's just the nearest town.) I love Hallstatt but I also like adding stops that don't take much extra effort.

Thanks, everyone. Laura, we will not have a car. I like the way you analyzed the situation. We lean Hallstatt at this point.

With a car I would certainly choose Hallstatt. I don’t think either are particularly easy by public transportation, But I have no personal knowledge. I visited both by bicycle

Wife & I stayed one night in Hohenschwangau (neighboring Füssen) last September, and one night in Hallstatt. We wish we stayed at least 2 nights in Hallstatt. The beauty of Hallstatt takes your breath away. We took public transportation from Salzburg to Hallstatt and it seems it took much longer than it actually did. Wish we had a car instead.

The fastest way to Hallstatt, train to Achnang-Puchheim and then train from there to Hallstatt via Bad Ischl only takes two hours, but I went by bus via Mondsee and St. Gilgen. It took a little longer, but sometimes getting there is as interesting as the destination. I'm glad I went the way I did.

If you have never been to Hallstatt, I would definitely go. It is one of the most idyllic places you will find. However, if you have already been there go somewhere you have not been before.
