Rental Car drop off near Melk

A trip we're planning to Southern Bavaria, Austria and the Southern Tirol for late September/early October has had to be modified a bit (thanks to discovering more interesting stuff in Rick's latest guidebook) - we're planning to pick up a rental car at the Munich Airport and would like to drop it off somewhere near Melk (and take the train for the last leg which will be in Vienna). But the transparency of European rental car agencies is nearly as opaque as obsidian. Does anyone have any suggestions about (a) rental car agencies, or (b) where the best place to drop off near Melk might be.

We're not terribly interested in attempting to drive to the Vienna Airport which is what both Sixt and Europcar seem to suggest. But that OBB website with its "Scotty" App is apparently more impenetrable than any such place known to the human race or even AI. We've been trying to figure out how to get from Salzburg to Melk for about a month and the best suggestion "Scotty" has made is to take the train from Salzburg to Vienna and then back to Melk for about 400 Euro each. (And to get that I had to spoof the dates, it just comes back with "ticket unavailable" when you try to gather cost information that far out)...

So I'd rather walk than pay $800 Euro to get from Salzburg to Melk via Vienna. We COULD leave the car in Salzburg if there is an easier way to figure out the Austrian train system.

THANKS for any help

Hi. Train from Salzburg to Melk is easy; many trains per day with one change, less than 3 hours and less than 40 Euro if bought in advance. Check the oebb website and use a date next month to see the options. Have a great trip!

Have you tried searching for car rentals in Melk and working backwards to see which of them is at Munich airport ?t

Ok, first. Picking up a rental car in one country and dropping it in another usually brings additional fees. Next, Melk is basically a village. They don't have any major rental car outlets there.

Both Sixt and Europcar have offices in the city of Vienna. There is no need to take the car all the way to the airport.

I am using the Scotty app right now. To get from Salzburg to Melk isn't hard. You take the train from Salzburg to Saint Pรถlten. You then transfer to a regional train for about 20 minutes, which brings you to Melk. I am not sure why you don't see that on Scotty. The cost should be no where near 400 euro each. Getting from Melk to Vienna will be very inexpensive and easy - I suggest an Einfach Raus ticket using regional trains.

As for the rental car, I suggest dropping it off in Freilassing, which is in Germany but basically in Salzburg. You will save a lot of money. That said, if you are just driving the car from the Munich airport to Freilassing, this also makes no sense. You should take the train.

A few responses - for some reason the OEBB site is still giving me trouble, even when I use different dates closer to now it keeps returning "ticket unavailable" when i enter Salzburg as a starting point and Melk as a destination. I tried doing it on my (standard) ancient computer (a 2011 iMac running macOS Mojave 10.14.6, which I know is not supported by a LOT of more recent "apps") and on my newer (2020 iMac running macOS Sequoia 15.4.1). That is where I managed to connect ONCE (out of about 10 attempts) and got the $ 400 Euro each cost (for second class) on an available train on OEBB.

I did check out the Westbahn site and that worked fine on the newer iMac (but not on the old one). The fares and schedule seemed quite reasonable from Salzburg to St. Polten or Amstatten, but they apparently don't serve Melk, so I'll probably still have to use OEBB for the St. Polten or Amstatten to Melk leg of the journey.

AND - we are planning to do quite a bit of driving before dropping off the car - we plan to visit both Southern Bavaria AND the Alpe di Suisi area in the Tirol, as well as Innsbruk, Salzburg and various other places. The reason for flying into Munich originally was to visit the Oktoberfest (we went to the Volksfest in Stuttgart a few years ago with our grandchildren, and it was GREAT). But that all changed AFTER the plane tickets were bought and paid for when my wife saw a video by one of Rick's staff which mentioned the "vomit hill" at Oktoberfest, which is apparently a place people are sent to relieve their excesses. She was so put off by that, and the cost of changing plane tickets from Munich to Vienna did the same for me, so we decided to drive on the earliest legs of the trip, and only take the train from Melk to Vienna. Dropping off the car in Salzburg is a piece of cake - and the extra fee Sixt charges to do that is nominal.

But with difficulty I'm having with OEBB taking the train from Salzburg to Melk and then on to Vienna is my difficulty. I guess I'll keep trying to figure out that OEBB Scotty app. Maybe I ought to try on my iPhone - perhaps they're not fond of iMac in that part of the world (we have no windows devices in this house - no offense to Seattle in general or Bill Gates in particular, but I first abandoned windows in my office, years ago, because of all the security issues, and then later at home - never a virus or so much as a security sneeze since we went entirely Apple there and at home)

In the meantime I appreciate the suggestion that we drop the rental car off in (or near) Salzburg and then take the train to Melk and on to Vienna. And so I keep up the struggle with OEBB which for me (a retired accountant, but nowhere near as tech savvy as I used to be) is becoming a definite problem. My wife and I have travelled independently for many, many years but I may have to engage a travel agent or tour group if this keeps up.

Thank you, though, for the replies!

Hi again. I just went again to oebb website (https://shop.oebbtickets.at/en/ticket) and tried Salzburg to Melk for mid April and instantly found options with no problem. Seems like there's some (human or tech) glitch when you try. But probably easily resolved. Try having a friend do it on their computer, or go to library and try there; I bet you will resolve quickly, and then can use oebb site to see options.

I second Bob's advice to use OeBB's website instead of the Scotty app. It is far too early to book the train tickets now. As long as the rolling stock has not be assigned to a particular train tickets are not offered. Try again in May.
The route between Salzburg and Vienna is the busiest in whole Austria, having about 60 connections per day. It should not be a problem to find a train matching your requirements. Make sure to include seat reservations when booking. The cheapest tickets, called Sparschiene, come with restrictions (bound to a specific train, no cancellation, no refund), but are very popular.
