We (2 adults and 2 young kids) will be in Salzburg july 23 to july 26. our hotel (eco suites) is a long walk from center and do offer free parking. Since we want to do daytrip (Hallstat and Bechestgaden) maybe get a car for our stay in Salzburg could be a good idea. What do you think about that ?
Hertz has a store within one block of the train station.

A car is very convenient for getting out to Hallstat and Berchtesgaden...there are some nice places to stop along the way and nice little cafes with tables under the trees as well as lakes and spectacular mountain views. Salzburg is quite small and driving is not difficult...obviously the core of the town is mainly car free.
In central Salzburg there are actually some clever parking garages that have hundreds of spaces. One is right across the river from the main part of town inside of a mountain...just a 5-10 minute walk from the center. The Parkhaus Linzergassengarage. The other one is south of town just below the abbey that was the setting for the front gate scenes in The Sound of Music - again about a 5 minute walk from the center. The Parkhaus Hypo-Garage. We used both garages when we were in Salzburg for 4 days last summer and they worked fine for our purposes! Maybe if you don't want to walk all the way from your hotel to the center, you could drive in closer and walk from one of the garages.
