Recommended drive from Salzburg to Berghof/Fussen Germany

We will drive to Fussen/Berghof from Salzburg. There is a route through Germany only and also a route via Innsbruck area. For something off the beaten track via Austria, we are considering a stop at Gnadenwald/Hall instead of Innsbruck, then north into Germany via Ruette. Recommendations for both routes appreciated with suggested stops. We are traveling early September.

It will take several hours to drive, so you may as well just take the main roads. The scenery is spectuacular, no matter which road you take.

I was particularly underwhelmed by Hall as a destination to visit in it's own right, but if it's on your route, why not stop? It's pleasent enough.

One of the highlights along your route is probably Burg Hohenwerfen, just south of Salzburg. It is visible from the road, and you'll be able to judge instantly whether or not you'll want to stop.

BTW, what do you mean by "Berghof/Füssen"? As far as I know, there's nothing called "Berghof" near Füssen.

The only thing I found worthwhile in Reutte was a discount store where I got something - but I can't remember what it was. Something mundane like a gipfel or something.

The scenery around there on the Austrian side is nothing special, mostly a long road going along a long plain, with the railway criss crossing the road as it follows a very small river and visits stations along the way.

If you have a chance to drive up or down something called the Fern Pass (Fernpaß in German), be prepared for very slow traffic and lots of delays. So many switchbacks that you can't take your eyes off the wheel, and if you could there would be a large truck blocking the view. Or you'd be being passed by an endless stream of motorcycles.

I've never heard of Berghof either. Where did you see it?

Re-reading - I didn't think much of either Innsbruck or Hall. I much prefer up the hill at Seefeld in Tirol.

Berghof (Halbech) is a "village" north of Fussen where we are staying. I saw an older post recommending a drive to Mittenwald (for a lunch stop, looks nice) then on to Oberammergau for a stop at Linderhof Castle then over to Fussen. Suppose that drive would be best via southern Germany only??

We will drive to Fussen/Berghof from Salzburg. There is a route through Germany only and also a route via Innsbruck area.

The route through Tyrol is more convenient. In that case, you would leave Salzburg, cross through SE Bavaria (motorways A8 and A93) into Tyrol to Innsbruck, where you leave the motorway west of the city when the signpost "Garmisch" comes up. Follow the scenic Zirler Berg route (highway nr 177, changing to B2 after the Bavarian border at Scharnitz) bypassing Seefeld and Mittenwald to Garmisch. Approx. 10 km north of Garmisch you will switch to B27 at Oberau (direction Augsburg) and after some uphill meandering you will end up in Ettal (great baroque abbey). One km north of Ettal keep left to Linderhof (or continue to Oberammergau first, approx. 4. km). The Linderhof road continues west into Tyrol again to Reutte, from where you will switch back into Bavaria to Füssen.

Alternatively, continue on the Tyrol motorway beyond Innsbruck (destination Bregenz) to Imst, then take highway nr 179 over the Fernpass to Reutte.

But if you take the Fernpass be prepared for plenty of slow traffic.

Thank you for this detailed route. It's the one I am choosing to do. Figured we would make a brief stop for lunch in Mittenwald then visit Linderhof and head to Fussen/Halblech via Lake Plansee. Hope we have a good weather day!

Stop at Chiemsee, Germany on the way from Salzburg. You can take a boat to the island where Mad King Ludwig build his version of Versailles, Herrenchiemsee, also beautiful fountains, the town is nice too, sail boats, stores, shopping, etc. It was a nice half day stop between Fussen and Salzburg for us and very interesting as never knew about this place.

So it seems a direct route to Innsbruck from Salzburg is best. We ill be staying outside Innsbruck as a base after Salzburg. Great tips
