What time of year were you planning? What interests you the most? How much time will you have? How do you intend to get around?

Knowing this will help folks in the forum with recommendations.

We’re going in mid August. We’ll have only 3 days total to split between Germany and Austria. We’d like to spend 2 of those days in the Tyrol area. Our interests are nature, art, history, scenic areas, we would also be open to any classes or activities immersing ourselves in the local culture.

1 Day in Germany: The Royal Castles region near Fussen.

Tyrol: Bad weather-- Innsbruck
Good weather-- the scenic Alpine valleys: Oetztal; Pitztal, & Kraunertal

Would also love to go to a spa/thermal bath. Would prefer to stay in a hotel outside a city center with scenic views, access to biking, hiking. If it’s family owned, quaint as opposed to large hotel chain that would be a bonus.
Is there a big difference between the 3 cities you mentioned (Oetzal, Pitztal, Kraunertal)?

Stay in Seefeld. Huge spa complex. Close to Innsbruck, Mittenwald and great hiking. We absolutely love the Hotel Princess Bergfrieden.

Is there a big difference between the 3 cities you mentioned (Oeztal, Pitztal, Kraunertal)? These are not cites. they are Alpine Valleys with lots of ski resorts that have many family owned scenic hotel/restaurants. ("tal" is the German word for valley.)

I'm partial to the Oeztal because it is closest to Innsbruck (the option for bad weather), the road is better, and it's more developed (more hotels) even though teh other two are probobly a bit more scenic. And how can you pass up visiting Obergurgl (above or over Gurgl) and Hochgurgl (top or highest Gurgl).? the question is, what's Gurgl?

I've never seen Obergurgl without snow, but it's beautiful for skiing!

If you want a little of both Germany and Austria Garmish-Partenkirchen has the spas and swim center from the Olympics and they are open to the public. It's scenic, the Zugspitz is right there, and if it's raining you can hit the casino.
