Recommendations for places to stay in Salzburg and Vienna

We will be spending 2 nights(early June) in Salzburg and 3 nights in Vienna after that. We will be taking the train to both Salzburg and Vienna and will not have a car.
1. Which area of Salzburg and Vienna to stay in?

2. Any hotel recommendations for a family of 4? (2 adults and 2 kids).

Thanks

we just came back from vienna and stayed here (2 adults, 2 teens). Nice apartment, we walked to a lot of places or took the U bahn. Michael was easy to work with! 3 bedrooms. No real living room which was kind of weird, but plenty of space to hang out.

Kim--

Thanks for posting the link to the apartment. On my last trip to Vienna, I spent a couple of hours wandering around the Augarten and thought that it would be really nice to stay in that area of Vienna. The apartment is bookmarked for future reference!

We enjoyed our stay in Salzburg at Die Weisse Taub. Nice people, breakfast and comfortable room at what we considered to be a reasonable price. A few minutes walk to the Dom and very easy to get to from the train station. From the station, we took a bus to Mozartbridge and walked a few minutes to the hotel. Restuarants etc. all nearby. We were just two, so don't know about a room for four. Good luck.

When traveling to Salzburg, we always stay in B&B's. There are a bunch of them, and you'll find your host to be extremely accommodating. See Booking.com or go onto TripAdvisor.com for recommendations..
In Vienna, we always stay at K&T Boardinghouse which is 50' from an underground station 1 stop outside The Ring. You can be int he center of activities in 5 minutes. The rooms are huge and impeccably clean. If it is good enough for Rick Steves to stay in, it's good enough form me. See KTBoardinghouse.at/en

I like the Hollmann-Beletage hotel in Vienna. A couple blocks from Stephansplatz (so extremely central and walkable to most everything), and very spacious rooms.

Ditto for Salzburg's Weisse Taube. It is right in town and offers great breakfasts.

We have stayed there 3 times.

Stayed at Pension Nossek. Great, great location. Nice staff. Clean. Good breakfast. So close to all the basic, must see, sites. On the Graben, so nice walking area. Near subway. Will stay there again if it's available.
Pension Bloberger in Salzburg was awesome. Very nice. Clean. Friendly and helpful. Great free breakfast each day and had a delicious dinner in restaurant one night. Beautiful views, but that's Salzburg. Distance to downtown maybe a neg. to some, but the bus to downtown center has a stop just yards away. We were using a car for our Austria touring so the free parking was a big bonus.
