Recommendations for 2 days in Salzburg

Hi - What would you recommend to do for two days in Salzburg.
Is feasible to see Koenigsee without a car?

Thank you!
Mary

There is a wealth on info already here on the Forum. Check out the postings under Austria. Also, do a Search of your topics. You may find that your questions are already answered- even before you ask them.

Take the 840 bus out to the Berchtesgaden train station, and then 841 bus to the lake. The TI has the bus schedules. Buy tickets from the driver.
Have a safe trip .

Hi Mary, we liked purchasing the Salzburg Card and doing several interesting things on it. Take the short funicular up into the fortress. If you’re a Sound of Music fan, there’s bus tours of the movie locations. We didn’t do that, but I looked up sites ahead of time, and we enjoyed seeing them as we were exploring other museums, etc. We’ve been to Salzburg a few times and like the quaint city. I like classical music, and there’s usually some concerts available.

We also took the bus over to Gilgen and took the boat onto St. Wolfgang. We stayed overnight two nights at lovely St. Wolfgang, but you could do it as a day trip if you run out of things in Salzburg.

You really need two days to properly see Salzburg. Here's the website of the Salzburg tourist office to get you started:

Highlights for me include the fortress, Mirabell Gardens and Hellbrunn Palace's trick fountains.

In my two days I did:

The Sound of Music bicycle tour.
A walking tour on my own
A concert at Hohensalzburg. Went up early enough to explore the fortress a bit.
The zoo. High priority for me. It’s a wonderful zoo.
Hellbrunn trick fountains. After the zoo just one bus stop closer to town
Mirabell Gardens

I wish I’d had more time

Slow Pace:
Day 1: Walking tour, funicular up to the Fortress, Augustiner Brewery (time it for lunch or dinner)
Day 2: Mirabell Gardens, Dwarf Statuary Garden, St. Sebastian's Cemetery, dinner someplace along Linzer Gasse (Alter Fuchs?)
Add in day trips of your choice:
Schloss Hellbrunn
Welt Der Gifte
Salt Mine (bit of a drive)

Faster Pace:
Day 1: Combine your choice of the stuff above into one day
Day 2: Day trip to Königsee, morning trip up Jennerbahn, afternoon boat trip on Königsee. You could easily do an early stop at the Berchtesgaden Saltmine in the morning if you had a car, but with transit, I'm not as sure. Possible, I just don't know. A taxi is supposedly €50 to Berchtesgaden and there is a 15 minute bus from there (Bhf) to Scönau am Königsee. Good luck.

I highly suggest booking a morning bicycle tour with Fraulein Maria's Sound of Music tours. Even if you're not a Sound of Music fan, the tour provides a great overview to Salzburg itself and the beautiful pastoral area just south of the city. The riding itself is mellow as you pedal through old-town Salzburg, stopping at the major sites, and then ride out to the Hellbrunn Palace. The views of the Alps are magnificent.

Mary, as other posters have pointed out, Salzburg itself is worth a couple of days. Most people I speak with who have visited did not bother with Hellbrunn and its grounds/zoo. From there you can take a pleasant and easy walk by the river back into town.

"Is feasible to see Koenigsee without a car?' - I always drive and take the odd bit of public transportation. I know you can take a bus from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden, then a second hourly bus to Schönau. Up to you whether you think it's worth the effort. I've been to Königssee twice. Whether it was the time of day (first boat, half-full) or the type of day (a cloudless hazy sky, still water skimmed with mist), Königssee was a magical place for me both times. There are quiet, scenic walks to be had behind the St Bartholomews stop (wooded paths). From the stop at Salet you can hike past Obersee to Röthbach Waterfall.
