Real-time translation apps

Has anyone had experience using the real-time function of translation apps like Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, JotMe, etc.?

Supposedly you can have a conversation in two different languages and the apps will translate back and forth in real time. I experimented a little on my own, saying a phrase in English, then German, etc. It was basic since my German is very limited. For a short conversation with simple words it did work.

Has anyone used it in Austria, or other countries?

I've used Google Translate and DeepL in numerous countries. They also allow you to point a camera at a foreign word, label, sign, menu, etc and it will translate to English, or any language of your choosing, on the screen.

I was in Austria last week and I'm in Germany now. I used them daily.

I once had a conversation in Romanian with a hotel housekeeper in Manchester who didn't speak English. She took out her phone before I could and was using Google Translate.
