Rainy day in Halstatt

Hi. We are scheduled to travel to Halstatt tomorrow. However, the weather looks horrible. Rain all day Monday, our day there.

I am thinking of cancelling and heading straight to Salzburg, where the weather, though by no means great, looks more tolerable (changing our two night stay at Salzburg into four nights). It looks like there is availability where we are staying in Salzburg--am checking on that.

Any comments on our situation? Any suggestions for a pretty rainy day in Halstatt, assuming we still go there?

I guess this is a hard call, but it depends on what kind of conditions they are calling for. It was rainy on our only day there, but it was a light drizzle and had some periods of no rain, and it was still clear, so we enjoyed ourselves. However, the town was mostly about the scenery for me, so if it is going to be a hard rain all day or if it will be foggy, I would probably skip it. 4 nights in Salzburg might feel like too much to me, but if there is nice weather you could take a day trip out into the countryside nearby or to Eagle's Nest, and that should help make up for Hallstatt. I hope you enjoy either way!

If you have 4 nights in Salzburg, check the weather while you are there. Maybe you could sneak in a day trip on a sunny day !

Even with rain, it will be worth it. Wear a rain coat with a hood, lose the umbrella, and enjoy! Always remember, bad experiences (including rain), make for great stories!

This is the most accurate 3-day's rain forecast for Austria:
https://www.zamg.ac.at/cms/de/wetter/wetteranimation
It is updated every 6 hours and shows time and date at the bottom, the color is for the intensity.

It looks not good for the Salzburg area on Monday and Tuesday, though.
Learning geography: You have to find out yourself where Hallstatt is on the map. :-)

Matt,

If you have rain gear, you could still visit Hallstatt. If you were planning to visit the Salt Mine, you'll be inside and out of the rain anyway.

You could also carry on to Salzburg and take a day tour to Hallstatt later in the week. You might have a look at THIS firm for local tours, including Hallstatt. If you're inside a vehicle when getting from place-to-place, the rain won't be as much of a concern.

As someone else suggested, you could also head for Berchtesgaden for a tour of the Dokumentation Centre and the Eagle's Nest. There's a convenient DB bus that has frequent departures from Salzburg.

Maybe you'll arrive in Salzburg in time to see the last of the big paper airplane competition, which is being held there this year. How exciting! ;-)
