Rain rain rain!!!!

Am taking the 6/2 tour of the Alps and i see nothing but rain in the forecast for Salzburg and Fussen, and you can see a huge rain front coming through Europe (radar maps). Anyone else worried about this?? What is the point of this trip if it is raining 24/7 and can't see the mountains or hike them???

When you see the rain icon for a particular day on weather forecast graphics, it doesn’t mean it’s going to rain all day. It only means some rain is forecast for that day. And beginning June 2 and the days following—the daily amount of rain forecast for Salzburg on the days it is forecast only amounts to 1/4.”

That’s not a lot of rain for a 24-hour timeframe. It also won’t rain throughout the entire day.

I take weather forecasts more than a few minutes with a grain of salt.

I use Accuweather. It gives me predictions of rain over a 10 day period plus hourly over the next couple of days.

That doesn't mean it's right.

I'm currently in Riga. I got here on Monday. The forecast for Thursday was 80% chance of rain. Now it's 40%. And when I look at the hourly forecast it predicts rain between 9 AM and 11 AM with the probability dropping to 20% for the rest of the day. It will probably be different by tomorrow.

Well you will be there. Come equipped for the weather. Some people hike in any weather. My experience is the weather comes earlier than the forecast by 6-8 hours or so. Talk to the locals as they as know the weather better than any forecast. On the Alm you can hear the cow bells through the low clouds and rain. Have a Speckknödelsuppe or Flädlesuppe with a Bier. Relax and enjoy your time in the Alps.

We’ve learned not to take the forecast too seriously, just as a guideline.
Our first trip to Spain predicted rain and cool weather. It was dry and hot.
Sicily also predicted rain, we had a sunshower one morning, that was it.
As people always suggest, layers and a waterproof rain jacket. Preferably one that folds up small.

It rained my entire vacation in Germany and Austria. Best thing you can do is bring a light rain jacket with hood. You will see that locals bike and hike in all weather. Plastic ponchos cyclists are all over.

Enjoy!

The climate change is for real and you can experience it in Salzburg; till 40 years ago, it rained ALL DAYS in Salzburg (the impossible weather pattern is quoted also in some Mozart letters); now you can have much more sunny days, and generally weather is much sunnier in the Alps, this is why glaciers are melting.

But when programming mountain holidays, you should not assume weather will always be sunny; it won't, so you should better have some padding and flexibility in your schedule. In most cases, it does not rain all the day long; and generally the summer mountain weather pattern is that weather is better in the morning but as humidity accumulates, the probability of rain is higher in the afternoon.

A lot of the on line weather sites use the US GFS system, because it is (still) free. But the GFS system is unable to produce meaningful forecasts for the alps, as its resolution is not high enough. Weather in the alps is very dificult to predict, and often two neighbouring valleys can have completely different weather.

Use a local source, and take any forecast more than 48 hours out with a truckload of salt...

The link given for Austria's rain forecast in a previous post is the best you can get. It is calculated from a special local weather model, having a resolution of 1 km by 1 km, i.e., squares of 0.6 miles side length.
