I’m looking at trains from Bolzano to Innsbruck March 28. On OBB app, there are RJ direct trains every two hours (10:36, 12:34 and 14:34.) The price is €9.70 per person (sparschiene tickets). Will this remain the same as we get closer, or should I book now. Still working on options for the next couple legs of our trip so dates might change
Tickets for trains tomorrow are 30€, so I would expect prices to go up as your date approaches.
Yes, the price will increase as time goes by until it reaches the standard ticket price, which is 29.90 EUR. The 9.70 EUR tickets are Sparschiene tickets, which are only good on the particular train indicated and it cannot be changed or cancelled. Think of it like an airline ticket.
If you do not want to commit in advance it is good to know that a ticket for the regional trains is 23,50, and that ticket is available always. even just minutes before departure, and is good for any regional train on the route.
The regional trains will likely have a change in Brenner; while slower, in summer they may be better than the RJ that is often very crowded. At Brenner station, regional trains for Austria often depart from stub tracks at the northern end of the station.
Pay the 3E extra for a seat reservation so no matter how crowded the train is you have a place to sit AND you know where it is. We took this train last Sept which ended up being pretty full. A bunch of people were traipsing around looking for places to sit; presumably they existed somewhere on the train but they needed to find them and were going between cars. For 3E you avoid this hassle.
John, I booked tickets yesterday and just assumed seats would be assigned. So it appears I can add seat reservation for 3€ each if I search for the same journey. But not seeing where to select seats or if app is connecting seat purchase to the ticket purchase. I completed seat reservation, but didn’t see any seat assignments, so undid purchase as I wasn’t sure I did correctly. Thanks for the advice
I am logged into the ÖBB app
Just buy a seat reservation for the train you bought. Seat reservations and tickets are not connected. You board the train and go to your reserved seat. If someone is already in your seat, show your reservation and ask them politely to leave. If that does not work, get the conductor involved.
When the conductor comes by, show him your ticket. Done.
I didn’t see a place to select seats, or are they just assigned once I reserve
You cannot pick your exact seat from a seat map, but you can specify a window or aisle seat, and if you want to be seated at a table, or in a compartment.
You can pick specific seats. I have picked my seats numerous times and as recently as for my upcoming March trip.

Thank you. All set with seat reservations
