Quick hiking trip Vienna?

Hi everyone,

Me and a friend of mine would like to do a quick trip to Austria for hiking.

Budget is very tight, so we are less on food and accommodation, and more focused on wonderful nature and experiences.

We'll be arriving Friday midday, and travelling home Sunday end of day from Vienna, 2nd week of March. I hope you can answer below questions as my Google-Mojo is failing me...

  1. Are there any scenic routes you'd suggest we take over others? Obviously they must be rather close to Vienna. We would love to get some altitude.

We had a look at Puchberg am Schneeberg? But here, we run into the 2nd question:

  1. Are small, free cabins a thing in Vienna? How about setting up a small tent? Where do I find any info, routes, etc. on these cabins/shelters?

Hope you can help! Thank you :)

First, Vienna is nowhere near the mountains. Next, free/tent camping is not allowed in Austria. There are Huetten (huts) in the mountains on trails, but that isn't at all near Vienna.

Schneeberg and Rax are the nearest mountains to Vienna, but these take an afternoon to hike. No one sleeps there, really.

As Emily wrote, the mountain range closest to Vienna is the Schneeberg (snow mountain) area, where are several hiking trails and mountain huts where you can stay overnight as well.

For this webpage you need Google Translate or a translation extension to your browser:

It easily reachable by train: You take an express train (RailJet or EuroCity) from Vienna main station to Wr. Neustadt where you change to a local train to Puchberg am Schneeberg. The total ride is 1:25 hours.

In Puchberg you have the choice of walking up to the summit (elevation 6800 ft), i.e. for the tougher people, or usually you take the cog railway up to Austria's highest train station. This shortens the time to get to the summit considerably. The ride on the mountain train from Puchberg to Hochschneeberg is 42 minutes.

you probably need to base in Salzburg and hike in the Salzkammergut
