quick Austria trip

Just finished an awesome solo trip to Scotland last week and now looking to plan my next one for next year. I am looking to do Austria for about 8 or 9 days (leaning more on 8 depending on vacation time with work). Does Munich/Salzburg seem feasible in that amount of time or should I add on another city in either country (thinking of Vienna or Berlin)?

Thanks Much!

With a week, I’d spend 3 nights in Vienna, train in one hour and overnight in Melk so you can bike or boat to Krems in the Wachau Valley with its castles and vineyards along the Danube River . Take the train to Salzburg and stay 3 nights so you can pop over the border to Germany in 40 minutes and visit Berchtesgaden National Park. Save Berlin and Munich for another time.

I like the idea of splitting your 8-9 day trip flying into Munich and out of Vienna (or vice versa) with a day trip to Salzburg. I would also consider splitting the time between Vienna and Budapest if you’ve previously been to Munich. You have a lot of good options.

You could fly in to Munich and fly out of Vienna. We had a wonderful trip with one night in Munich, 3 nights in Salzburg, and 3 nights in Vienna. You could add your extra night to whichever of those three you would like more time. The train connections are great. Highlights in Salzburg were taking the Monchsberg lift up to the Modern Museum with a great viewpoint over Salzburg and then walking the footpath to the Hohensalzburg Fortress from there and then down to Nonnberg Abbey, It is worth it to get the Salzburg Card for entrance to many places in Salzburg. The fortress rooms at the Hohensalzburg Fortress were free before 11:00 am on the Salzburg card. We also made a reservation in advance for the Mozart concert at night in the Golden Hall at the Fortress. It was outstanding! The Mozart Residence Museum, Mirabell Gardens, restaurants on Linzergasse, and a bus ride to Schloss Hellbrun with the trick fountains and gardens were also enjoyable. If you go to Vienna be sure to see Schloss Schoenbrunn and the gardens there. It was one of the best palaces and gardens we had seen in Europe.

are you counting travel days in the 8-9? If so that means really only 6-7 days to do/see things. Even less time if you are moving between cities. No time for more than two places in my opinion. There're a couple of good day trips from Munich and Salzburg.

You can do the trip including both Berlin and Vienna but skipping Munich.

Fly into Munich , connect to Linz, stay in Linz with the option of a day trip to Salzburg, then take the train to Vienna. Take the night train Wien Hbf to Berlin. That's how I would do the trip but the hard part is always deciding on where to go and skip.

You have the night option Munich to Berlin too, depends upon your travel style ( I have no problems taking night trains) and how desperate you are to see Berlin.
