Public transportation in Berchtesgaden

We are staying in Salzburg in early August. We plan to take the bus to the Eagle's Nest and do a tour there. After the tour, we would like to spend some time in Berchtesgaden, have lunch and tour a salt mine before returning to Salzburg. Will we be able to get public transport to do all of that? We are open to trains/busses/taxi or Uber. Trying to avoid renting a car if possible.

We took the public bus to the salt mines, on the way to Berchtesgaden. Do get tickets in advance, as times sell out. Then the public bus continues to the lake, and beyond. Also, take the boat trip on the lake, and hike to the falls-absolute beauty!

Buses go all over the place in Berchtesgaden. I've been there four times and never used a car or anything other than the buses. The buses leave from the ZOB (Zentral Ombibus Bahnhof) in front of the train station, down in the valley, below town, and there is a bus between the ZOB and town. The bus from Salzburg, the Watzmann Express, stops in the ZOB. The last couple of times I was there, my accommodations included a free pass for the buses.

There is a bus from the ZOB to Obersalzberg, from where you take a special mountain bus, not included in the pass, up to the Nest. There is also a bus that stops at the Salt Mine.

You didn't say anything about the Eagle's Nest tour. Is it the tour from Salzburg and you are just foregoing the return trip with the tour and staying in Berchtesgaden after the Nest, or are you taking a tour that starts in Berchtesgaden, or are you doing it on your own?

Add: To see a list of the buses, click here. Download the Fahrplaneheft (schedule notebook) or the individual schedules. From the Heft you can see all of the schedules.

The bus from the ZOB to the Kehlstein Busabfahrt, from where you buy your tickets for the special mountain bus up to the Nest, is bus 838.

There are two buses that stop at the Salzbergwerk (salt mine). Those buses are 848 and 840. 840 is the Watzmann Express, that goes between Salzburg, Austria, and Berchtesgaden.

The bus from the ZOB to town is Ringlinie, bus 839.

I agree. There are busses all over that area to accommodate locals and visitors; even with stops at pretty rural locations. I don't think you'll have a problem getting around.
