I know this is a niche question, but I'm wondering whether I can get high calorie protein shakes like Ensure in Vienna and, if so, what would they be called and where could I find them? Thanks so much.
You may not find Ensure, but there will be something similar. I can't speak specifically to Vienna or Austria, but in Germany, if I were looking for something like that, I would start at a Pharmacy, a larger one with a retail section, and ask the Pharmacist. Most I have encountered speak at least some English (plus you might have Google Translate) and are very helpful. A second option is "Health Food" and supplement stores, which would sell something like that. You might see something in a supermarket, but traditionally they do not carry things like medicines and supplements, even off the shelf items.
Probably with some Google searches, you might be able to come up with some local brands to ask for.
Hi, I think you would start your search in a Drogerie (like an American drug store without the pharmaceuticals). You would look in dm drogerie markt, bipa or Müller. The latter is a particularly large store. I don't think a health food store (Reformhaus) would stock anything like protein shakes. They run to the herbal and natural and I doubt anything as processed as these would be stocked. You could also try the larger BILLA or Spar supermarkets. You are looking for words like "Bio" (organic), "Protein" or "Eiweiss" (both mean protein), and "Molke" which means whey (one source of protein). If you do a search on Google you will get some brands to look for. An Apotheke is for medicine and pharmaceuticals.
Lavandula
I found this in Müller - https://www.mueller.at/p/layenberger-3k-protein-shake-beeren-mix-52764/?originId=search_suggestion&originType=search_suggestion
There is a Müller in the Mariahilferstrasse in Vienna (shopping street). I don't think a big container like this is practical to carry with you when travelling. If you have sachets, can't you bring some with you?
EDIT: This is bipa, which is in every neighbourhood: https://www.bipa.at/c/ernaehrung/sportnahrung/protein-shakes
Lavandula
Not sure if you can find the premade ones, but Spar, Billa and Muller carry protein powder that needs to be mixed with a liquid.
DM seems to have one premade one.
Thanks all for the information. I appreciate it.
You can go Westbahnhof in Vienna the top floor where such a "Reformhaus" is located. That health food store would have what you might be looking for. I go to Westbahnhof often on every trip
I live in Austria. You can find protein drinks in every grocery store and in every drug store.
Thanks so much, Emily.
As Emily says they are available in all groceries stores. Look for "This is Food" and that kind of thing in both the refrigerated cases and on the shelves.
