Well, the train takes about an hour and costs about 25€ a ticket. People do bring luggage on trains and there are racks to put the luggage.

Daytrip.com is a fair reading of the going price for a private transfer. They want 273€ (welcome to Austria ching, ching, ching) which is about 10 times more expensive than 2 tickets on the train once you figure in the cost of getting to the train stations with all of your luggage. Daytrip.com will pick you up at one hotel and drop you at the next, which is easier than schlepping luggage across town from train stations. They also have 5 stock stops that they offer for some sightseeing along the way. They run 40 to 50€ a stop. Do one or two of those and the private transfer has a lot more value.

wmt1 (below) was correct, DayTrip is sort of high on this one. Unusual, they are never the cheapest but they are generally closer to average. Ive used them a few times, always went very well. But here is another, cheaper: https://www.wientaxi.at/en/airporttaxi-melk

A private transfer is a waste of money, IMHO, unless you have so much baggage that you cannot carry it on your own.

If you insist going by car look for local companies.
E.g., this one charges about €140 from Melk to Vienna (you need not to go all the way to the airport). Use a translator for webpages in German.

If you have the time and the budget, while the train makes a beeline from Point A to Point B, with a car you can be picked up at one hotel and dropped off at another hotel after spending the day visiting some of Durnstein, Kreuzenstein, Klosterneuburg, Gottweig Abbey and Graffenegg (the Daytrip.com standard stops). That can add to the quality of the trip, if its in your budget.

OP: Please post or DM me regarding your experience.

When I travel alone I travel in second class on the train and ride the metro in town. With my wife we move to First Class and taxis. In 2027 we are planning a trip with good friends who will want to do Melk via a private car from Vienna.

Its a lot more cost effective ..... I once used the DayTrip.com guys to get from Hallstatt to Salzburg. I just wanted to see more than I could from a train. But the prices I saw from Melk were a bit ... well ... Have a great trip.
