Prague to Vienna, then Vienna to Zagreb travel tips

We are planning 3 nights in Prague, the four in Vienna, then on to Zagreb.

Bus is looking like the best way to go, vs. air.

Prague to Vienna looks reasonably fast either way 4 to 4-1/2 hour) & cheaper by bus. Bus seems to beat train from Vienna to Zagreb, in terrms of time (c. 5 hours vs. c. 6 hours) ... and is LOTS cheaper than air.

Am I right on this? What bus companies do people prefer ... and why? What am I missing in terms of amenities or other reasons to choose?

Thanks,

Fred, from Seattle

If you want to go by bus between Prague and Vienna then so called yellow bus used to be called Student Agency now RegioJet (the same company as train). Why? Very few stops, service on board, bathroom, AC, movies, papers, well kind of upscale.

I prefer to go by train (RailJet) to/from Prague. There are seats at tables, there are power outlets for your laptop or mobile devices, you can walk around, go to the dining car, etc. I find it more comfortable than a bus. And I am just speaking about 2nd class. If you manage to get a "Sparschiene" bargain ticket there is not much difference in price.

Thanks for the info on Prague to Vienna. Train is sounding better. (Railjet/Regiojet)

Vienna to Zagreb?

Last June, we went Munich-Zagreb on the train. About 6 hours. Very comfortable. I would think Vienna-Zagreb would be quite similar. Trains are more pleasant than buses, which we have also taken in Croatia - Zagreb-Zadar for instance.

I never went this route, but there is one direct train from Vienna to Zagreb per day. Travel time is 6:45 hours, arrival about 11pm.

Flixbus has several connections per day. Travel time is between 4:45 and 5:30 hours. It is certainly cheaper than any train bargain ticket. I personally don't like this company because their low prices are based on the exploitation of their drivers (low wages, tricks to extend the allowed driving hours).

We are in Vienna now, having taken the train from Prague this morning. I would recommend the train. Comfortable, and a reservation in second glass gives you a compartment: The regular trains were comfortable as well. Our trip is all about taking the inter city trains as part f the whole experience.
