Places to eat near the Mariahilfer Strasse in Vienna?

Hello,

I will be in Vienna September 30-Oct , part of a larger trip to Prague and Salzburg. While in Vienna, we decided to stay at the Pension Kraml, near the Mariahilfer Strasse street area. Unfortunately in Rick Steves book, Vienna, Salzburg and the Triol he doesn't mention more than a cafe and a market in that area. Is there a lack of good traditional or modern Austrian restaurants in that area? Will we have to go to the Ringstrasse area ? Im just wondering because usually Rick Steves has recommendations in all of the areas he recommends lodging.

Thank you for any information

The Mariahilfer Strasse area has a very vibrant street scene with restaurants and shopping. Your B&B host should be able to point you to a good local restaurant.
And if you see somewhere you want to eat in The Ring, you can be down there in 1 to 2 underground stops--5 minutes.
We often used to research our trips down to where we would eat--and never end up eating there. Now, we.just roll with the flow.. We do always stay in this area at K&T Boardinghouse when we visit Vienna.

Of course you don't have to go to the Ringstrasse area - there are more restaurants in Vienna then what Rick knows about :). You are also very close to a bus stop and two Ubahn stations, which can get you anywhere in just a few minutes.

A few suggestions - Café Rüdigerhof is in a historic building and has excellent schnitzel; Disco Volante which many say has the very best pizza in Vienna. The area is known for good Asian food, not really traditional Austrian, so if you want that, then hop in the bus!

Austrian restaurants like you are looking for tend to be in the First District where the tourists are as locals eat their traditional food at home, not in a restaurant.

As Emily noted don't let yourself be fooled by Rick Steves' recommendations.

First of all, get acquainted with the area you will be staying, especially with public transport. Public transport in Vienna is ubiquitous, easy to use, and safe at all times. Pension Kraml is right in the middle of the 6th city borough and its homepage only mentions two U-Bahn (metro) stops, namely of U3 (in the north) and U4 (in the south). Both stops are walkable, but a quarter of a mile away.

There are bus stops much closer. Line 57A to the center (opera), and 13A running north-south, touching all city boroughs from 4th to 10th. Use the official online city map of Vienna: https://www.wien.gv.at/stadtplan/en/
Enter "Brauergasse 4" as the search term, then put a check mark on the left to "Public transport", and you will see the bus lines and their stops.

Then search for restaurants in the 6th city borough:
https://www.falter.at/lokalfuehrer?r=Wien&p=1060&t=Restaurants
It is in German, but easily comprehensible. You may choose another borough, narrow the search by selecting a certain type of cuisine, etc. If you check "Empfohlen" (recommended) you get an even better selection. Use the online city map to check the addresses.

The official online city map of Vienna is superior to Google Maps, but to be strictly neutral it does not show private enterprises like hotels or restaurants (but their WiFi hotspots).

This restaurant is ca 10-15 mins from Mariahilferstrasse. It's called "Schnitzel Wirt" located at Neubaugasse 52. Neubaugasse and Mariahilferstrasse intersect. Once there walk down on Neubaugasse to #52. If you're after Schnitzel, this is a very recommendable place, not pricey, packed with locals and tourists. No credit cards.

There are numerous places to get traditional Austrian cuisine, near Karlsplatz and the Tech Uni, (mainly locals), near Am Graben, etc....all depends how far you want to go in the city.

Actually you have to walk up from Mariahilfer Straße. It is the best place for Schnitzel made of pork. (The original Wiener Schnitzel is made of veal.)
The restaurant is closed on Sundays.

The menu at Schnitzel Wirt offers Schnitzel made from veal as well, pork too if you want that.

Schnitzelwirt is the most famous place for pork Schnitzel in Vienna. I had been there several times already, and I cannot remember that they offered an original Wiener Schnitzel from veal.

This is the current menu, all pork:

The only alternative is a Schnitzel from white turkey meat.

I also recommend Schnitzelwirt highly.

There's not much on Mariahilferstrasse unless you like to shop, which I don't. We did like Cafe Ritter but if you walk south to Gumpendorfer Strasse we liked Cafe Sperl quite a bit more. (It turns out that a certain young future Führer liked it, too.). The Naschmarkt is also within walking distance to Mariahilferstrasse and there's a lot of good, cheap eats there.

Be warned -- a Schnitzel Wirt meal can feed two! We get one schnitzel with two orders of potato salad and we're fine (our first time we ignored this advice from Tina at K&T -- luckily I had a Ziploc bag in my purse so the extra schnitzel went home for dinner the next night.)
