Place to stay on the OUTSKIRTS of Vienna.

I know that this is the opposite of what people usually want but I an looking to find a place for my husband, son (17), and I to stay on the outskirts of Vienna. My husband has an ankle condition that makes it very difficult for him to carry luggage on and off trains (even when packing light), through stations, down streets, etc., so we need to go from town to town by car. Yes, I know, it's a waste of $$ to keep the car parked all day but we are renting it from Prague and have to return it there as well, so this is our current plan.
I am hoping to find a place during the month of July that is in a suburb or neighboring town, where I could have free parking and good public transport to central Vienna. It could be a hotel, apartment, guesthouse, etc...we don't need luxury. Just a nice place to sleep. Four or five nights.
Any thoughts?
Thanks so much in advance.

Hi,

How far away from Vienna? What about Wiener Neustadt? I did a day trip last May from Vienna, pleasant and interesting. It is a neighboring town and on the train route between Vienna and Graz.

Klosterneuburg? Quite upmarket and, as the name suggests, a famous monastery.

Or, a bit closer, Grinzing, which is famous for wine and is close enough in to be linked by tram.

I can see why someone might want to stay in the suburbs if it were the second or third trip, but on the first I would think you would want to be where you can capitalize on your time; especially if you are mobility impaired. I sort of like walking out the front door of the hotel, sitting in their outdoor café and looking up at the castle on the other side of the river as the night winds down. There are some real advantages to renting a car as it allows you to reach the small places in between but if the only reason is to avoid trains then you might look at private transfers. Everyone's definition of "expensive" is different but we do it from time to time because it is a reasonable solution in our circumstance. Having 3 makes it a little more reasonable as you pay by the car and not the person. This way you can also plan open jaw if that works better for you.

Hotel Ibis Wien near the Westbahnhof has parking for €13 per day, which could compare pretty favorably to suburban transport for three. Other parking garages are also in the €13-20 range, e.g. around the Mariahilferstrasse hotel neighborhood, in the city but outside the central ring.

Hi,

What is referred to above re: going from Vienna to Baden bei Wien is Karlsplatz where you catch die Badener Bahn., very convenient, and you avoid the train.

we have stayed just outside of the main area at Spiess & Spiess, a very nice B&B. It is just a short walk to the underground into central Vienna

Thanks so much everyone for the suggestions...we have found a hotel in town with parking which, for us, is the best option. Cheaper than public transport from an outlying suburb or community.
