Our river cruise this summer stops in Passau and we have the option of doing a walking tour of Passau or an added cost trip to Salzburg. We've never been to either.
What are your opinions? Which location would you choose to experience if you could only choose one?

I would stay in Passau, although Salzburg is much more appealing. But the problem is the distance. You need two and a half hour to get from Passau to Salzburg, no matter whether by bus or by train. If you alight from the ship in the morning and must be back for dinner then you will have only about three and a half hour for visiting Salzburg. Not to talk about that the cruise ship companies charge premium prices for those side trips.
