Parking in Vienna

We are driving from Venice to Vienna. We have read about the "expensive hell of driving in the city" so will be parking in the "expensive garages". Any suggestions about good, safe, maybe less expensive choices? Our hotel in is city center but we planned to park further out and take the U-Bahn or S-Bahn to city center. There are 6 of us including 2 grandchildren ( well-traveled 7 & 5 year olds).
Thanks for any advice!

Center city hotels usually can tell you where the nearest parking garages are.

The closer you come to the city center, the more expensive are the garages. Forget parking on the streets; it is short parking only (1.5 to 2.5 hours) and you must pay for it, too.

The park and ride garages - as Emily suggested - are the cheapest choice. They all are very close to a subway (metro) or train station, so you have access to public transport for going to the center.

Coming from Venice via the A2 highway ("Autobahn") I suggest to change to the A23 near the border of Vienna and take exit "St. Marx" which is very close to the park and ride "Erdberg". There you have access to U-Bahn U3.
