Parking in Melk

My husband and I will be traveling to Melk in May for 2 days. I was thinking about staying at Pension Barbara in Pochlarn about 15-20 mins. west of Melk on the Danbue. The women I spoke to on the phone was absolutely wonderful and the place has great reviews. However, she said the best way to go to Melk was to take a taxi which I am thinking would be expensive. It looks likes they have a train and bus that runs through the town but I was not able to find the schedules. Can anyone provide me with the website for the busses and/or trains so I can look up the schedule and prices. We can also drive since we will have a car. I also noticed Rick Steves mentions a free parking lot across the Danbue from Melk. Has anyone ever used it? Can you park there all day? Did anyone have a problem with parking spots being available.

I am trying to figure out if it is cost effective to stay so far away and drive or take public transportation. The hotels I have found that have free parking in Melk start at 125 euro a night. I was hoping to find something less expensive.

I am also considering Gastehaus Egger in Emmersdorf, across the river. They were great getting back to me via email, however I have not been able to reach them by telephone and that concerns me.

Hi Laura,

Thank you for this. I will certainly check this out. I don't know why she said that either. It may of been her trying to understand English since I do not speak German.

Hi Laura,

I tried going onto the site you sent me. I can not find a train station in the town of Pochlarn, Austria where we would be staying nor did recognize Melk. I tried Austria's train website and still it does not recognize the town of Pochlarn. Do you know if their is a train stop there or how to go about finding where the train does stop? We would rather drive into Melk I am just not sure about the parking situation. One of the hotels I called said all day parking is not easy to find.

I've just tried both www.bahn.de (German Railways) and www.oebb.at (Austrian Railways). They both found plenty of trains from Pöchlarn to Melk. ÖBB gave a price of € 2.40, you can't get cheaper than that.
Note the name is Pöchlarn, NOT Pochlarn. Ö and O are two different letters in German. But if you put in Pochlarn it finds Pöchlarn as the nearest match.
