Has anyone gone to Palais Liechtenstein in Vienna? If so, did you tour the palace, what is there to see, do they have gardens? I have never read anything about this palace in any of my guide books on Vienna. Maybe I missed it when I was reading up on Vienna as there is so much to see and do there. I read about it briefly in a book and wondered if it is worth seeing, what is there to see and if this palace is open to the public to tour. I saw photos of it on Instagram and it looks stunning. I google mapped it and it looks like it is near the Volksopera which I have been to and is further out from the city center. Can you take a tram there or a subway? I took two subways to get to the Volksopera when I was staying near the museum quarter. Any information would be helpful. Thanks.
You didn't miss this Ann . Information about visits is sparse and not readily accessible . We wanted to visit a month ago , but there was only a reference to irregular and difficult to arrange tours . The place was locked up tight as a drum on the occasions we walked by. I'll try again for next fall . In any event . the palace had just been renovated and recently reopened three years ago , and the pictures I saw made me salivate ! It's behind the Burgtheatre and Café Landtmann just off the Universitat Ring on Bankgasse . I'll keep looking for next fall . In the meanwhile , here is the website - https://www.palaisliechtenstein.com/de/stadtpalais/allgemeine-informationen.html and for your immediate enjoyment , this sequence is from the Vienna New Year ( Silvester ) Concert of 2014 , filmed at the palace - https://youtu.be/AcKbSOY4RY0 The costumes are by the English designer , Vivienne Westwood
There are some other sequences from the palace in the complete video , and I'll look them out for you in the next few days, Meanwhile , Sue joins me in wishing you a wonderful holiday , Steve
If I am not mistaken , this one was also shot at Liechtenstein Stadtpalais -https://youtu.be/YqH2iM6Hiik
Thank you Steven for all the information. Happy Holidays to you and Sue!!! I hope to see you Jan 14! I taped the show Mrs. Eb wrote about! We had a lovely time last week at lunch!! See you soon.
Sorry Ann , you were referring to the Garden Palace , by the Volksoper ! I was thinking of the City Palace . No harm done , I didn't mean to send you on a wild goose chase . The website should help clear this up for both of us , I'm going to look more closely at the Garden Palace
I just went back to the website and have this sorted - both palaces can be seen by booking advance tours , very easy ! I'll explain in detail when we meet , meanwhile , enjoy those videos . Also here is the one we were talking about at the meeting - This is Strauss' well known " Tales from the Vienna Woods " , also from the 2014 concert . The strange instrument in the introduction is an Austrian Zither , and it is original to the score . The video is shot in the Wienerwald and includes beautiful photography of Klosterneuberg Abbey ,about 45 minutes from downtown . It was a high point for us in October ,and the fall foliage was as you see it here - https://youtu.be/9Nl8y5KLpqs
No worries, now I want to know more about the City Palace. What is the City Palace??? Let me know what you find. Thanks Steven.
Stadtpalais (literally translated- city palace) of the Liechtenstein family is a building in the city center. The family also has a gartenpalais, literally translated as garden palace, which houses the art collection.
From Steven's first link, I see that public guided tours are on "selected Fridays only" and in German, but with an English audio guide provided. It looks to me like it's worth booking ahead.
The royals of that time had at least two residences, one within the city walls of Vienna, i.e. close to the emperor, the second outside for the summer time mainly.
Three examples of noble families:
Liechtenstein - city palace (Bankgasse) / garden palace
Habsburg - Hofburg / Schönbrunn palace
Eugene of Savoy - city palace (Himmelpfortgasse) / Belvedere palace
