I'd like some itinerary help for our 2 wks Sep 21-Oct 4 via Vienna. We're 2 well-seasoned female travelers; don't hike/bike; not into nightlife; enjoy a local classical concert; beginning to enjoy museums more than pubs (sigh). We rarely have solid plans: a typical day for us is to leave hotel about 10 and return around 7 having walked all over despite best intentions to return for nice dinner! (We'll have found some local restaurant/pub instead.) Normally we stay 7-10 days in one city and explore via local transit (tram/bus) rather than Ho-Ho bus or organized tours. This time we're hoping to explore a bit more by train/bus (no car). We'll have 2 24-in suitcases.
Our 1st day will be jetlagged and last day on morning flight, so realistically we have 12 good days. Our initial plan was simply Vienna, Salzburg, and maybe Innsbruck but then we discovered Salzkammergut (Sts Wolfgang & Gilgen, Bad Ischl, Hallstat) and the Wauchau Valley (Melk/Krems/Durnstein).
Is Innsbruck "worth" scheduled 3 days or could it be an unscheduled overnighter from Salzburg? Could Salzkammergut be just a daytrip or unscheduled 2 nights? Since it's harvest time would Wauchau be better as an overnighter from Vienna? Are train rides scenic between major cities? Various guides say Hallstat and Melk overrun by tourists. True? Might there be language problems outside cities or on train/bus?
Thanks much for your experience and suggestions!
