Overnight Train---Venice to Vienna

Hello and thanks for the assistance.

Any insights or recommendation for an overnight train from Venice to Vienna in late March 2025? I have done some research and am leaning toward NightJet with either the Couchette Carriage or the Sleeper Cabin.

  1. We are two guys in our 50's exploring without our wife/girlfriend. If we go with NightJet, would you recommend the Couchette Carriage or the Sleeper Cabin?

  2. What other trains would you recommend?

Thank you.

If you want to take an overnight train from Venice to Vienna your only option is the Nightjet. The sleeper cabin is much nicer so that is what I'd recommend. Although it costs more so if it is a budget trip a couchette is a good option.

If you have the time I'd suggest that you consider the day train as well. It is a long journey but it will give you some great views of the Alps.

The sleeper cabins are very comfortable. But even if you book a double cabin for you two guys, the prices are in the range of an airline ticket.

The cheapest private for two that I saw was 389 euro. A well located tourist hotel in either city will cost you 300 euro. So the extra 89 is the cost of the trip for two. Works for me I guess. Oh, 464 euro if you want a shower. Still a bargain I guess.

I have taken 3 sleepers in my life. The first in 1981 I just don’t remember. The last two were this year, and they were of a different “style” than a NightJet and yet I still slept on the second one. I guess I would do it again if I had the time in my schedule. But if time is short, like I gotta get back to my job, I would fly.

Oh, there is always the issue of arriving someplace very early. A little stinky (unless you got the shower compartment) and with luggage. Always gotta think that through.

Thank you all for your comments.

I booked a sleeper cabin with NightJet.

FYI, we will fly EasyJet from Geneva to Venice. The overnight train from Venice to Vienna, rather than flying, is mostly for the experience and adventure.

Good that you selected the NJ option, keep in mind no problem doing that with the Sleeper to boot. The sleeper option is the first to be sold out. Obviously, a lot of travelers can tolerate or enjoy the Night Jet.

If I were doing this route on Night Jet, no sleeper option for me. That would not be my choice, not worth the spending the money for this extra level of luxury, a seat in a 6 seat compartment or the general seating area is perfectly satisfactory.
