We are going to Munich, Germany in November. We wanted to do a day trip to Salzburg, Austria but we do have the ability to stay the night in Salzburg. Is it worth it to stay the night or will a day trip be enough?
Absolutely stay a night if you can.
A day trip will give you only part of a day. One night (depending on arrival and departure times) will give you perhaps three quarters of usable touring time. Two nights, if possible, will be a much better choice.
I vote for overnight - Salzburg is an incredible place and well worth more than a day trip. I actually enjoyed it more than Munich. There is beautiful scenery and so much to see and do. Definitely spend the night. I was actually there for 2 nights and could have stayed longer.
Overnight! We stayed two nights on a trip in 2015 and would have loved time for a third. Castles, riverside walks, museums, old town strolls, wonderful meals, beautiful vistas lit differently by morning, noon, night. We stayed at a lovely little hotel perfectly situated in old town: Hotel Elefant https://www.hotelelefant.at. Enjoy!
My choice to stay the night or even two.
Add me to the list of people saying spend the night in Salzburg. I think it’s a great city, and it’s pretty cool to look up at night and see the fortress lit up. I spent 5 nights there in the spring.
Spend a night! When in November?

Paul we will for sure stay 11/15 but could do a second night as well
If you can do a second night, I’d say do it. Add an afternoon on a lakeship on the Wolfgangsee is awesome.
Another vote for Salzburg. It’s much more beautiful than Munich, with tons to do.
At least one, two is better. I did 3 last time, 9 the time before
