Outside Vienna— kirche am steinhof

I’d love to visit, but my research has shown its only open to the public on Saturdays at 4pm or Sunday afternoon. I’m only in Vienna from a Wednesday to Saturday afternoon. Do any of you know if it is open at any other time? Appointments available? If I have to, I will leave Vienna late Saturday night. Thanks.

These were the hours when I visited last Autumn , Don't miss this place , it is one of the greatest works of Viennese Art Nouveau ,and one of Otto Wagner's masterpieces . Allow adequate time to appreciate Moser's glass work and the exquisite mosaics . Watch this documentary before you arrive in Vienna - https://youtu.be/AFZBOTgL_Hk

These are the only times as it is located on the grounds of a psychiatric hospital so people can’t come trotting through at all hours.

Also , allow time to see the design of the hospital buildings , as well as items such as the lighting fixtures and fence balustrades , which are Wagner's work as well . Further information - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirche_am_Steinhof The back story of the hospital itself is fascinating , and will also add to your understanding and appreciation of the complex .

These are the only times as it is located on the grounds of a psychiatric hospital so people can’t come trotting through at all hours.

The premises of the hospital, in a garden-like setting with separate buildings, are open to the public all the time. The hospital is not a sole psychiatric institution since decades anymore, it has 15+ medical departments now.

The reason for the very restricted access times to the church is just because to minimize the risk of theft. Pieces of original Art Nouveau are extremely valuable. The church is an integrated work of art, from the building, the interior, down to the smallest pieces like door handles or nails, all specifically designed by the most renowned artists of that time.

Do any of you know how the public hours work, do I need a reservation or just show up? I’ll be arriving by train, is it close to station? Thanks to all who posted!

As I recall , no reservation was necessary . I'm a bit confused ; you say you will be arriving by train ? Where from and from which terminal will you arrive ? That will determine the directions for getting to the site . Here is the location - https://www.google.com/maps/place/Am+Steinhof+Church/@48.2106225,16.2765638,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x476d082f7c463e0f:0xe1260d0ac6ac1779!8m2!3d48.2106225!4d16.2787525 The 48A bus goes from Karl Renner Ring ( Ringstrasse ) to the hospital entrance . About a fifteen minute , slightly uphill walk takes you to the church .

Two public bus lines go to the hospital (Otto Wagner Spital): 48A and 47A. If you tell us from where you want to start I can give you hints for the best route.

This is the official online map of the City of Vienna: https://www.wien.gv.at/stadtplan/en/
Enter "SMZ-Otto-Wagner-Spital" into the search field, and you will get an overview of the premises. You may switch from the map display to an aerial photo. Using the check marks on the left you can overlay a wealth of other information, e.g. public transport.
