One night in Vienna

I'm finishing a RS tour in Prague and flying out of Munich 2 days later (in the morning). I thought it would be nice to spend one night in Vienna and go to an opera on my way to Munich. I will be traveling by train.

Does anyone have any suggestions for modest lodging hear Vienna State Opera?

I think this sounds like a nice idea, but in reality it won't be very fun. It is 4 hours by train Prague-Vienna and another 4 hours Vienna to Munich. That's a lot of train riding to me, when it would be faster to just get on to Munich. It is also hard to do justice to Vienna in one night. Why not consider a city between Prague and Munich, like Nuremberg?

Emily makes a fine point. You could simplify things even more by simply going to Munich. You'd have an afternoon there and then one whole day. There's plenty in Munich to fill one day plus a few afternoon hours on your arrival day.

I don't believe that we have a tour that ends in Prague. Can you check your schedule?

Oops. My bad. The RS tour is Prague to Budapest, so I'll be ending the tour in Budapest and taking the train to Munich to fly home 2 days later. Thanks for alert.

If you are going from Budapest to Munich, then Vienna makes a little more sense. It's six and three quarter hours from Budapest to Munich by rail. It's a little over two and a half hours from Budapest to Vienna. And just under fours from Vienna to Munich. So you wouldn't be adding much actual train time by seeing Vienna, but given check in and out at hotels etc. you will have substantially more actual touristing time if you just continue on to Munich.

We stayed in the Hotel Pension Suzanne which is less than one block from the State Opera. They offer a nice breakfast and the rooms were more than satisfactory. We also attended a performance at the State Opera and thoroughly enjoyed it. Good luck and safe travels,

Thank for for all your resonses.

Stopping in Vienna on the way does make for a lot more packing and unpacking, but I've never been to Vienna, and I have been to Munich, and, most importantly, I'd prefer to see the opera that's on in Vienna.

I'm trying to decide whether to stay at the Munich airport or near the train station in Munich. My flight leaves at 11 am.

Well, one night in Vienna makes much more sense if you are coming from Budapest.

If your flight is at 11am, I would spend the night in Vienna near the Opera House so you can have a nice taste of Vienna on your arrival day and into the late evening (opera). Plus, I like those early morning views of the city I'm leaving on the way to the airport.
