One day Salzburg from Munich Itinerary

I would appreciate feedback and recommendations on a Salzburg day trip itinerary for myself, my husband, and our two sons (15 and 17) for a Saturday in early June:

-approx. 8:00am leave Munich on Meridian train using regional day ticket for Bavaria; arrive approx. 9:45am

-rent bikes for four hours [http://www.avelo.at/] and ride alongside the river to Hellbrunn Palace, tour palace, and return via Hellbrunn Allee

-follow Rick Steves walking tour of Salzburg, including Hohensalzburg Fortress

-return to Munich on 8:15pm train

  1. Should we get a Salzburg card? (It seems that Hellbrunn(30 Eur) plus Hohensalzburg (52 Eur) wouldn't justify the card (105 Eur), but if other museums are 'must-see' then maybe it would be worth it
  2. Other itinerary suggestions, including bike rental options?
  3. Recommendations for lunch or dinner?

Thank you!

I think that between the two sites you will break even on the Salzburg card. So anything you do incremental that is included would be free. I think you have a nice day trip planned. We have enjoyed Restaurant Stieglkeller, which is just below Hohensalzburg.

Check the Salzburg card options as they may offer a deal on bike rentals. I know the Innsbruck card does.

Have a great trip!

Thank you, Marc! We're looking forward to this day and appreciate the input that it looks do-able. We'll definitely check out the restaurant recommended as that's where we should be near dinner time.

Wow! The Hohensalzburg castle is 52€?!?! It’s been a few years, so I don’t remember how that breaks down but if you can just take the funicular up for less I would do that. The castle museum was not notable in any way whatsoever. You really just go up there for the views (which are tremendous.) On the whole I found Salzburg’s museums/sights underwhelming, but the city and its atmosphere to be utterly charming.

The bike ride to Hellbrun was easy, but very enjoyable. There’s some places to sit in the castle gardens that make a nice spot for a mini picnic, pick up some stuff in town for lunch.

Food wise though, all my Salzburg daydreams revolve around Augustiner Biergarten! One of my favorite places on earth. Great beer, and great food with plenty of variety. Beats the pants off any Munich Biergarten.

Yes, the Augustiner Braeu is the absolute must for dinner. Nothing better than drinking beer under those chestnut trees. Your 17 year old will be able to enjoy as well. Not better atmosphere in all of Salzburg.

I cannot argue with Augusteiner as a choice!

I would double check the estimate on Hohensalzburg. When I went, there was a small/moderate charge for the funicular. There was an additional part of the complex that cost more, that we skipped however, but even then that estimate you have seems really off to me. Plus, with just one day, I don't think I'd would take that much time at Hohensalzburg. I would go up for the view and a quick look around. There are so many other things in Salzburg that I would prioritize higher. Make sure to go in the beautiful Salzburg Cathedral. I would look at the RS guide for Austria, there is a list of sights and he ranks them. For Salzburg, his ranking was pretty similar to mine.

The all inclusive ticket is €16.30 (including funicular) when bought on the spot, cheaper when pre booked online. The "basic ticket" is €12.90 - so, yes, for four adults it mounts up to nearly €52. .
