ŒBB tickets--print at home?

I will be buying tickets for Ljubljana to Vienna online. I have explored the ŒBB website but cannot tell if the tickets are "print at home". Since our journey will start in Slovenia, I need to know how I can retrieve the tickets. Thanks for your help.

There are three options for obtaining your tickets:

  1. Have a pdf file sent to you for printing at home (what I always had done)
  2. Pick-up at the train station
  3. Get the ticket on your smartphone (ÖBB app required)

Thanks. Since the journey will start outside Austria ( in Slovenia), I assume we cannot pick the tickets up at the station. And I do not have a Smartphone. So it is good to know I can get a PDF with the tickets to print at home.

How far in advance can I purchase? I know the timing for other train systems ( Trenitalia, SBB, Bahn.de), but this will be the first time using ÖBB.

I hope your credit card has the 3D Secure password, otherwise you won't be able to complete your purchase on OEBB's website and will need to buy the tickets in person. I spent a frustrating amount of time on the phone with my card issuer, Capital One, to confirm they don't use it.

You may also buy your ticket via phone using your credit card (without 3D-Secure) by calling OeBB's service line (+43 51717) and selecting 3 within the (German) voice menu. I have never done that, so I cannot tell how professional (and capable of English) the staff is.

Christa---I have both an American Express card ( which I have read here will be accepted by ŒBB), and a Visa card registered with Verified by Visa. So I should be OK with purchasing on the website.

Before you start your buying process, please double check with customer support whether the print at home option is available for journeys originating in Slovenia. As far as I know, the Slovenian Railways do not accept home-printed tickets, they have to be in the standard international ticket format, although this may have changed recently. There have been reports on the Slovenia section of the Trip Advisor forums as recently as last year that the ÖBB website instructed travellers to pick up the tickets at an ÖBB ticket machine, which are not present at any station in Slovenia.
