Not-to-Miss Between Vienna and Munich

We are flying standby from the US to Vienna on Sunday, December 22. We fly standby home Sunday, Jan 5. We hope to fly in and out of Munich (can't fly to Vienna because we need to stick to United flights). We love art, music, museums, good food, Christmas markets, outdoor recreation. And we enjoy smaller cities and villages as well as big cities.

Itinerary

  • Fly into Munch on Dec 22 and train to Vienna
  • Vienna: Dec 22 to Dec 27 (train to Budapest)
  • Budapest: Dec 27 to Jan 1 (Enjoy Budapest and visit Danube Bend towns/cities as day trips--Szentendre, Visegrád, Esztergom, ay preferences?)
  • Jan 1: Begin train travel west to Munich
  • Munich, overnight: Jan 4
  • Depart Munich for home: Jan 5

Questions: What towns/cities/villages should we be sure to visit/stay in between Budapest and Munich? Some ideas include Melk, Steyr, Salzburg, Hallstatt, Prien, but I'm not sure if the train goes to these places and I need to do research. Would love recommendations about these locations and any not-to-miss places. Thank you!

In addition to Vienna, which you will already have visited, it appears the direct rail route from Budapest to Munich passes though Györ (Hungary), Linz and Salzburg.

Györ would make a very nice stop. It has a good-sized, pretty, historic district and a bunch of small museums (mostly art-related), and it's well-positioned for side-trips to Pannonhalma Abbey (by bus).

Melk, Steyr, and Linz are beyond Vienna, on the way to Salzburg. Hallstatt is beyond Linz, to the south southwest. Prien is in Germany, west of Salzburg.

You can explore train schedules and travel time on the Deutsche Bahn website, but most of the tickets to these destinations probably would have to be purchased from the Austrian or Hungarian rail websites.

Sylvia, it has to be a United-operated flight - can't be one of their global alliance partners?

Thank you, acraven, for the Gyor suggestion and also the link to the train site. I'll start researching where the train goes. Much appreciated! Stan, we are limited to United flights. Sure wish we could fly with the global affiliates as well. That would open things up a lot.
