non tourist cafes and coffee shops in Vienna

Hi All,

Need some advice finding non-tourist cafes/restaurants/coffee houses in Vienna. We dont mind travelling out to the suburbs of the city, as we have a week to explore.

We are experienced travellers (to some degree) and are over the highly priced fast food type food outlets in europe.

Any advice from the locals (or savvy travellers ) would be appreciated.

The Cafe Weimar is pretty non-touristy, many opera performers from the Volksoper go there after a performance.

Restaurant Engelhardt in Heilegenstadt is very local...they don't have a website but here is a link to finding them:

The Heuriger Weinhof Zimmermann out in Neustift am Walde is great:

Although they are listed in guidebooks (p. 200 of Rick's) I don't recall seeing other tourists at http://www.cafesperl.at/ and Café Braunerhof also seems a good bet.

You will find tourists at both, but at least Sperl has that old world history about it. Weimar will put you right into a more local experience. Rick needs to do way more homework for this city.

My advice is to get out of the first district for authenticity. Vienna is a surprisingly small and compact capital with excellent public transportation, so moving out of the first is easy.

I would suggest that you explore neighborhoods such as the area around Yppenplatz and Brunnenmarkt:

...the area around the Karmelitermarkt:

...walk down Neubaugasse/Lindengasse and head over to the Spittelberg area

...enter the MuseumsQuartier complex and check out the scene there

...or wander the south end of Langegasse.

In all of these areas you will find interesting and local eating experiences.
