We are planning a trip to Europe this June (2016). We are having problems finding information on overnight trains. I know it is way too early to make reservations but we just want to find out approximate times for these trains. The train sites are full of disclaimers (due to the unrest in Europe several sites state) and are difficult to navigate. Has anyone taken the night train from Vienna to Venice recently and what rail system or company did you use? Also, if you have any information about night trains from Paris to Munich, we would greatly appreciate your input. We are traveling with our two teenagers and are hoping to reserve a sleeper car for the family.
Pretty sure the Paris-Munich night trains are gone. (You can check on Deutsche Bahn bahn.de) We took it two years ago and the trip was 6 hours daytime, 10 to 12 at night.
You can see the night train schedule at www.bahn.com. Vienna-Venice is still running, but Munich-Paris is history. That train can be reserved at www.oebb.at
Paris-Munich is no longer running as the daytime express trains have got down to just over six hours. I would recommend booking at www.bahn.de 92 days in advance for the cheapest prices. Vienna-Venice shouldn't be affected by the current rail disruptions as it is off the main refugee routes from the Middle East. I would look into daytime trains on that route as well, though, as the scenery is quite attractive. Again, search and book at www.oebb.at
There is only one rail system/company that you can use for this route - OeBB, the national rail carrier of Austria. Links to OeBB have been already provided above. Do not use Rail Europe.
Personally, I think that night trains are from the devil and on this route there is so much lovely scenery that you should make the trip by day. It is were me, I'd just fly.
It should also be noted that there have been no disruptions from refugee movements in months. Even when there were many refugees travelling by train through Austria to get to other countries, they were not heading to Venice.
Just mentioned this in another post, but look at The Man in Seat 61 for good info on this route. We're going Rome to Vienna in a couple of weeks on the night train, as a bit of a lark. We'll see if we sleep, although I've known my beloved to sleep almost anywhere.
EN 237 leaves Vienna at 21:25 and gets to Venice at 8:24. It goes through Villach and Udine, not Innsbruck. Use the Austrian Rail website, www.oebb.at.
Hi,
Going from Vienna to Venice by night train is one where you can tailor your route depending on time and other factors, One route is that suggested above.
You can take Vienna to Munich day, then change to the CNL night Munich to Venice, if you want to spend an hour or two in Munich at the Hbf. I would myself would that the CNL night train, loaf at Munich Hbf; it's large with its underground passage, give yourself plenty of time to spare.
Paris to Munich (CNL) is no more....unfortunately.
Hi Marty. Have you been successful at getting your sleeper reserved? We just took the train overnight from Rome to Vienna the other day and enjoyed our sleeper car very much. Slept better than I thought I would!
