Nice town to stay in when traveling from Saltzburg to Murren

My husband and i will be traveling from Saltzburg to Murren in July and would like to break the drive up by staying overnight somewhere for possibly 2 nights. Any recommendations that would be in the mountains or by a lake.
Thank you!

The whole journey is only just over 6 hours. How far do you want to go before stopping for the night?

You know you can't drive to Muerren, right? And you know about IDP and the Vignettes?

I went to Salzburg to Murren with a stop in between in Luzern. Love Luzern. I took a OBB train to Buchs, changed to Swiss train to Luzern (changed trains in Zurich). Luzern is stunning. Its a beautiful train ride from Luzern to Murren. And I don't know where your trip starts, but I would honestly leave Salzburg via train. I can see having a car in the lake region of Austria but beyond that trains are easier and possibly cheaper. If you buy a Salzburg to Buchs train ticket in advance it is very reasonable.

Linda or Bregenz. Correct spelling is Salzburg, which I mention only to be helpful.

another idea would be Appenzell which is supposed to be quintessential Switzerland which I have not been to but desperately want to go.

Nigel,
I do know that you can't drive in Murren and I am assuming IDP is the international driving permit? I don't know about the Vignettes. Any info would be appreciated!
Thank you!

I'd aim for Lindau for two nights, as suggested, spend a day there or thereabouts (maybe catch Meersburg, depending on your speed of travel?). Landsberg is a pleasant stop on the way to Lindau.

Some countries have tolls for using their roads. Some of those countries set up toll booths on major roads to collect those tolls - like France and Italy.

Some other countries charge a road use fee to drivers for a short or long time. Countries in that bunch include Slovenia, Austria and Switzerland. Before you drive on a motorway in one of those countries you buy a Vignette which is a playing card size sticker which must be stuck to the windscreen in a specific place.

I expect that your car will be rented in Austria so will likely have the appropriate sticker in place for Austria. If you had rented it in Germany - which has no road toll system for cars, but does for trucks - then when you entered Austria you would need the Austrian Vignette. A recent price for the Austrian Vignette has been €7.90 for 10 days.

The Swiss Vignette is not available for such a short period - it is only available for an entire calendar year (plus the December before and January after, so for locals 14 months) and it costs CHF40.

Vignettes are available a fuel stations on main roads on the approach to the border, from maybe 20 km out.

Don't miss having the right vignettes. The countries enforce them strictly and fines can be high. There was a thread here in the last month or so of a very unhappy man who had to pay big money.
