Nice area to stay in Vienna ? 10th to avoid ?

Hi !

We will be in Vienna for 4 nights at the begin of july with our 2 teens.

We have found a nice Airbnb but the nearest metro station is Reumannplatz. Like you must know that are seems to be sketchy and to be avoided. Bteween horo stories we can read on internet and the relaity the margin can sometime be very wide !

What would be your opinion on this ?

What would be a nice (but not too expensive) area to be for first time visitors ?

Thanks

Vienna is a very safe city, even in the night you can walk on the streets or use public transport. Reumannplatz has not such a good reputation because a lot of young men are hanging around presenting their foreign cultural background. As long as you refrain from starting an argument you should not have a problem.

On the other hand, you have there one of the best local restaurants:
https://meixners-gastwirtschaft.at/

And there is the most famous ice cream parlor:
https://www.tichy-eissalon.at/
Here the legendary ice cream copy of the popular dessert "apricot dumpling" has been invented.

I wouldn't stay in that area for a vacation. It is safe, but not really an area I would recommend for a good impression of the city.

I stayed out in Landstraße, on a side street just off the main drag of Landstraßer Hauptstraße. We were about equidistant between the U-Bahn stops Rochusgasse and Kardinal-Nagl-Platz, and we used Rochusgasse every day to get us into the city centre. We felt very safe in that area and the public transit is very easy to use to get you closer to the main sights in the centre.

One cool thing about where we were is that it's just round the corner from an enormous concrete flak tower that was built and used in the Second World War as an anti-aircraft defence. The whole structure is still there and pretty interesting to go take a look at if you're staying in that area and any of your group is into that part of history! (But definitely not something to go out of your way to see if obsolete WW2 constructions aren't your thing...)

Thanks for all the answers. We get it that the 10th it's not the best place to be for visitors. But the airbnb seems very nice, got stellar reviews and the price is lower (like 80 euro per night lower) than anything else decent we can find in ''better'' neighbourhoods.

I really wouldn’t stay in that area. Seriously.

Emily, you said it’s safe. That’s almost all we need !

Find me an appartement in a better spot with AC and washing machine below 150 euros/night rated 4,90/5 on Airbnb….

This is a very nice and reasonably priced place. It seems to be a former attic of an old house converted into a penthouse flat, as this is done in Vienna at numerous places, making money out of previously unused space.

Besides the area, which may be not so appealing, the only downside is the lack of an elevator.

I'm in Vienna a few times a year and I stay right near the Huptbahnoff which is in the 10th. (However the 10th is a fairly large district and I can't speak for areas much further south than the train station.)

The area I'm in has been completely gentrified with office buildings, newer apartments and a few hotels. I can be in the center of Vienna either by the U-bahn or the "D" tram in 15 minutes.

For first time visitors or those with limited time, staying close to the center of Vienna is probably better. But if you got a good deal......

Ok let me give it to you straight. This area is 90% Turkish / Syrian and there has been recent community violence in this exact area (stabbings) that is within the community. The right wing politicians declared this exact area a no-go zone during recent elections.

That said, I work right around the corner and am in the area daily - as an obvious outsider. I also work with migrants and have a good appreciation of the community dynamics. I have no problems. But, again, I would recommend dropping a bit more $$ for each night to be in a better location. It will be a good investment.

So it’s safe but we could get stabbed ?
Nice.

Well the 700 people who rent that appartment manage to be safe.

Well, you asked the question, and you got answers from locals.

As I shared, the violence has been between members of these communities. It is safe for you but be aware.

You are getting what you pay for in terms of location and ambiance. Most Viennese don’t go to that area at all out of fear and xenophobia.

Ok thanks. We will keep the appartment. We are not affraid by that and I teach in multicultural school in Montréal.
It will be perfect.

I was in the 10th district quiet often last summer solo, only a couple of times at night but still near the train station. The only area at night, still dusk, I perked up more in terms of situational awareness was around the Prater area. "They" are in their own world.

Yet, feeling unsafe did not hit me as an outsider and I look it too (the bad guys can spot you a mile away if they think are worthy of that) or even the possibility of being in potential danger, ie, nothing like SF at night and Oakland. (day or night)

Hi we could have another option, a bit more expensive (40 euros per night). Would it be a better choice to stay in Landstrasse ?

It would be on Lowengasse near obere Weißgerberstraße (near Pampui thai restaurant).

Emily. I agree with you, but each gets to define "holiday" for themselves.

I stayed in Landstrasse back in December, but just a few blocks from Wien Mitte, and I thought it was a great area. I ventured into the general area that you're looking at to visit the Hundertwasser Museum, and thought it looked fine during the day. Perhaps Emily will weigh in.

I live in Landstrasse, the 3rd District. I go by this area just about every day. Much better than the 10th.

Emily, thanks !

It’s better than the 10th but is it a good location (not the Third per se but the exact location we would have) for a first time visit ? Is it easy to go to main sights from there ?

Does it worth 40 euros per night ?

Thanks again !

Is it easy to go to main sights from there ?

For better orientation in Vienna give the official online city map a try: http://www.wien.gv.at/stadtplan/en/

Not only you can search for addresses, but superimpose a vast amount of information by using the check marks in the legend on the left ("show on the map"), e.g. public transport, points of interest, art & leisure, city walks, culture, events, etc.

Look up both alternatives for your accommodation, include public transport to be displayed, and compare.

As suggested above, to get the most out of your time in Vienna, please take the time to use a mapping website or app or guidebook to learn your way around the city. For example, if you put the location of your lodging into Google Maps and then click on Directions and specify St Stephen’s Cathedral, you will see a number of routes using public transportation. I believe you are staying very close to a major tram line which will get you to Wien Mitte - from there you can take the U-Bahn or walk to the center of the Ringstrasse.

This location in Landstrasse is one block from Radetzkyplatz where you can jump on tram 1 or O. Both take you quickly to the Ring/city center (or you can walk in just a few minutes). One block to the other side puts you on the canal, which is a glorious way to walk into the city.

In this area you will find cool places to eat and drink, like Cafe Menta, Gasthaus Wild, Strandbar Herrmann, and the cafe in KunstHausWien. There are two notable Hundertwasser Buildings very close to this location. The neighborhood is quiet, safe and desirable (unlike your alternative location). This location is also much closer to the city center (much). To get to/from the airport, Landstrasse/Wien Mitte where you can get the S7 is two stops away on Tram O. Also Landstrasse from Wien Mitte to Neulinggasse is quite a cool area now, including Rochusmarkt and many good bars/restaurants - a nice alternative to the tourist hustle of the first district.

Once again, many thanks for those who have givin me answers/help in this thread. The map is a good idea, we will take a good look on it.

Emily: thanks for the restaurants/walk ideas. We will look for them once on the ground ! There still a question....is that spot in Lansstrasse worth 40euros more per night than the one in the 10th ? Both airbnb seems very decent. Could we still look for something in a more decent/fun/easy neighborhood ? The price will still rise I guess !

Once main thing with the one in Landstrasse is that we can get the Airbnb at our arrival time (10 am) that would allows us to drop our luggage, take a shower, and go outside to explore the neighborhood a bit while fighting our jetlag.

Yes, it is worth the higher price.

I see as well that you got similar feedback to mine on Trip Advisor.
