The biggest event on December 31st is the Vienna New Year´s Eve Trail.

The year we were there, we chose a festive dinner overlooking the cathedral and main square. They decorated to the nines and after dinner, we got to go up to one of their rooftop suites to watch the fireworks in every direction and enjoy more drinks and finally soup. It was a memorable evening. This was at the Hotel am Stephansplatz. I don't know if they still do it, but if you search in early fall, you will be overwhelmed by choice - dinners, balls etc...
