Is it possible to travel from Salzburg by train, tour the castle, and return to Salzburg in one day? If not, where is a good place to stay near the castle? Thanks

It would be an awfully long trip for just 40 minutes at the castle, but if you left really early and had a reservation for a tour time, I guess it would be possible. However, there are numerous places to stay right in the village of Hohenschwangau at the base of the castle hill or nearby in towns like Horn or Schwangau or in the town of Füssen.

It is really not that impressive to make such a hard trip. I'd rather spend my time drinking beer in the Augustiner beer garden in Salzburg--one of the good breweries

I have to agree. It's not worth the time spent traveling to and from.
Consider Ludwig's Herrenchiemsee Palace or Hohenwerfen Fortress instead.
We loved staying in the old town of Fuessen twice. 10 minutes from Neuschwanstein.
