We are going to Vienna for a week in December. What neighborhoods would you recommend for us to look for accommodations? Is public transportation a reasonable way to get around the city?
Thanks for your thoughts, Kathryn
Public transportation is very easy in Vienna and is THE way to get around the city.
An excellent summary of Vienna districts is provided in this post by Forum member and Vienna resident Emily:

As I shared in my linked post above, public transport in Vienna is excellent, cheap and easy to use. It is the only way to get around (we haven’t had a car for 17 years). I recommend buying a week pass which allows you to use buses, trams, subways and regional trains within the city limits as you need. It is an honor system, so just make sure to keep your pass (it will already have validity dates) on you or on your phone at all times.
As for districts, my linked list remains accurate, however, the 21st district on Sunday was the only district in Vienna to cast the majority of their votes for the neo-fascist anti-immigrant party (FPOe), so I definitely wouldn’t stay there.
As an added hint, you can always easily tell what district you are in while visiting Vienna by looking at street signs on corners. The first number indicates which district you are in. 4., Wiedner Hauptstrasse (4th District), 3., Landstrasse (3rd District), etc. Also, the inner two digits of the four digit postal code of an address tells you the district as well. So, 1120 is the 12th District, 1030 is the 3rd, 1010 is the 1st. There are 23 districts in total.
Thank you, Dave and Emily. This is so helpful. Sorry to repeat a question that has been asked many times before. I hadn’t found the search bar when I submitted the question! Emily, is there a way to link to other posts you’ve made on the forum?
Thanks again, Kathryn
Unfortunately, I don't think so.
Emily, is there a way to link to other posts you’ve made on the forum
Actually there is - click on Emily's user name on the left - you will be taken to her profile - from there you can follow a link to her posting history.
But it shows every reply I've ever done, so hard to find the ones that are really informative. Oh well.
When you hover with the mouse pointer over the date and time of a particular post then you can see (at least on a PC) the link address of that post. You can copy it and insert it anywhere you want.
Thanks for the tip -- I will scan through the recent ones and pick up some suggestions. -- Kathryn
